College students run on caffeine. Whether espresso, brewed coffee or tea is your forte, East Lansing has a wide range of coffee shops that appeal to each and every person. If you want to try and avoid the larger chain coffee shops, then one of these three places should be your next stop.
Espresso Royale
Although Espresso Royale is a chain coffee shop in the midwest, stepping into the Grand River location sure does not feel like it. This is a location perfectly placed on the Grand River strip that students find convenient and easy to access. Espresso Royale offers a wide arrangement of teas, espresso drinks and some crazy concoctions unique to their shops alone such as "feel better tea" that many students swear by when they catch a cold. The Grand River location also offers a few pastries and sandwiches for customers to try. One of the best features of this coffee shop is their patio in the summer that then turns into an enclosed patio in the colder months with a blazing fireplace that is a perfect place to sip on a warm drink. The environment is very relaxed and is an easy place to study or chat with a friend.
Strange Matter Coffee Company
This off the beaten path location closer to downtown Lansing will serve you one of the better cups of coffee you have ever had. Located on the corner of Michigan Ave and Clemens, Strange Matter is an easily passable place in a tiny corner location that not many students seem to know about. Strange Matter offers a simple but traditional espresso menu and they also roast hand-brewed coffee from coffee roasters across the state and country. In addition to that, they offer tea and a few pastries that always look delicious. Not to mention they serve almond milk, which has become slightly hard to find in coffee shops around the East Lansing area. Due to the constant flow of customers, Strange Matter is not the most ideal location to crack open a book to study, but if you're looking for a coffee experience that will blow your mind, it is the first place you should stop.
Chapelure
Located off of Hagadorn behind MSU's east neighborhood, Chapleure is a bright and cheery coffee shop with a wide variety of delectable European and Asian pastries. With some of the most personable and friendly staff members, you will feel at home as soon as you step into this location. Offering all of the traditional coffee and tea beverages as well as a few frozen drinks, the most eye catching feature of Chapelure is their always stocked pastry case which holds everything from cakes, tarts and macaroons to croissants and sandwiches. The beautiful, every changing assortment of treats will keep you coming back for more. The calm environment presents an easy place to study and relax.
If you are looking for some new places to try this year, step out of your comfort zone and head on over to one of these three amazing coffee shops in our very own East Lansing. You will not regret it!
