Coffee Friendship, or Coffee Addiction?

Do you have control of your coffee intake, or does it control you?

Coffee Friendship, or Coffee Addiction?
Kathryn Lee

Coffee, a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, is enjoyed by most. It can be served hot or cold with milk, sugar, creamer, flavors, etc. The choices and combinations are endless. It’s a well-known drink all around the world, and may be sacred in some cultures.

Coffee is known to be used to stay focused or awake, and even for whatever reasons like sitting around the fire, enjoy while reading a book,. It’s especially known for college students. I, myself, drink while doing homework, writing, or just hanging out with friends.

Can drinking coffee become a habit though? Do people have control over their intake of it? There’s roughly 95 milligrams of caffeine in one 8 ounce cup of coffee. If one were to not keep watch of how much they have, an awful crash could occur. Our bodies can only handle so much at once.

I asked people on Facebook and Twitter to take a small survey for me. I received ten responses, but those ten responses helped to see those who drink coffee if it’s an issue or not. The time frame I was asking of their intake was in a week span, not a day, which I realize would have been more helpful. None the less, what I did get was still helpful.

The five questions I presented in my small survey were:

  1. How much coffee do you have in a week?
  2. How much do you think you spend on coffee?
  3. When do you drink your coffee?
  4. Do you use coffee to… help focus, stay alert, just because, other?
  5. Do you, honestly, think coffee is a problem for you?

All of these questions were multiple choice, except for the last so they could elaborate on why, though a few chose not to. Overall, most said that they thought they didn’t have a problem. Which, this may be the case, but it was only a very small portion compared to the entire population.

Those who were being honest, and shared that they might, I would like to quote them. The anonymous answers were a bit humorous, and definitely relatable.

“I don't think that coffee is necessarily a problem for me, but I will say that it is an important part of staying awake in my 8am class.”

“I mean, probably, but, it’s college life.”

“Yes I drink way too much but I can’t stop, y’all.”

“Not at all.”

The results for the four other questions are pictured above in pie charts under the specific question. On question three, the other could be morning and mid-day, morning and night, all three, or just whenever they can. Please, if you feel as though you might, comment. And even if not, give your perspective. I will freely admit, I do. But like one of the responses above, it’s the college life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
