A couple of weeks ago, rompers, yes rompers, took the internet by storm when a group of four guys from Northwestern University launched a Kickstarter campaign for their male-version of a piece of clothing that had been used by mainly women and children since its early inception in the 1900's. The original raise goal of the project was $10,000 but quickly ballooned up to $366,000 after its first week of launch before the four guys decided to end it three weeks early. In turn, they opened up a website to take pre-orders for a few different designs of their aptly named "RompHim".
Rompers themselves are nothing new to the fashion world and it surely is not the first time they have been worn by males. Nonetheless, during the week that this article of clothing was trending across the internet, it sparked a more serious debate and that is masculinity amongst men when it comes to the things they choose to wear.
However, I will preface by saying that my intent in this article is to focus on the factually wrong opinion that seemed to be common amongst those who were against these rompers for men as opposed to the masculinity debate itself.
Now, while I personally would not wear a romper designed for men, I am not going to knock any other man that is not only confident in rocking the one-piece outfit, but pulls it off too. I also will not question a man's sexuality or ability to build and lead a strong household based on an article of clothing. I just do not feel that I can pull the look off. And while it is perfectly fine to have an opinion on something, an opinion can be factually wrong. Yet, as I skimmed through many comments on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, what I came across was many factually wrong opinions along the line of, "it's gay if a guy wears a romper."
Now, before I continue on, I am going to provide the definitions for the words gay and feminine as defined by dictionary.com
1. Gay (adj.): of, relating to, or exhibiting sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one's own sex; homosexual
2. Feminine (adj.): having qualities traditionally ascribed to women, as sensitivity or gentleness.
News flash, the only thing that can make a man gay is if he is sexually attracted to other men. Putting on a piece of clothing cannot make a man attracted to other men. If one's stance on male rompers was that they feel they are feminine, that would be perfectly acceptable as rompers have been typically associated with women (and babies) throughout its history. However, that is not the stance I saw many people who were against them take. Comment after comment after comment, it was some form of a statement that attributed a man to being gay if he wears one, which is factually wrong based on the definition of gay.
Is
it fair to say that male rompers (or any other accessory/article of clothing
typically
Here's a hypothetical: If Bob who is 26 and married with two children decided to go out and buy himself a romper, is he now attracted to men because he chose to purchase and wear a romper and is his ability to lead his household now something he cannot or does not know how to do all because of this article of clothing?
Just as the types of clothing a woman chooses to wear cannot equate her to promiscuity, the types of clothing a man chooses to wear, be it a romper or anything else, cannot equate him to being attracted to other men, nor can it equate to him having an inability to build and lead a strong household.
