It has become official. Hillary Clinton has clinched the Democratic nomination, meaning that she has decisively secured the spot as one of the two presidential nominees that our country will have. She has secured enough superdelegates that are necessary to win the nomination. These superdelegates are unelected delegates who are free to support any candidate they wish at the party’s national convention. Although many of us will be upset that she has clinched the nomination, it is truly very powerful and historical to be the first woman ever to be the presidential nominee.
Donald Trump, along with Clinton, has essentially secured the nomination for his respective party as the only Republican left in the race. He has obtained enough delegates to become the GOP nominee. This means that in elections, Clinton will be running against Trump for the presidency. Although it will likely be a close race between the two, Trump lacks something notable that Clinton has. She is the first ever female presidential nominee. Trump is simply in the long line of male presidential nominees that have come before him.
Not only are many citizens of our nation proud of her milestone, but Clinton is proud as well. “Thanks to you, for the first time in the history of this country, a woman will be the nominee of a major party for President of the United States,” she wrote in a Facebook post on June 8. “Last night we were able to say with pride that in the United States-it doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, what's your appearance or what is your gender-there is no barrier that we can tear down or no limit that we can't overcome.”
Because Clinton is the first ever female nominee, women will have a more powerful say in how our country is run. This is important when there are several issues that women must deal with every day that a President could change with their executive power. This includes making less than dollar on the dollar while working the same job as her male counterpart, along with several other issues in our nation. If Clinton is able to become our president, she will do everything that she can to make sure that women are able to live more freely and peacefully than they ever have before.
Although our population is not as excited and united as they perhaps should be about Clinton being the first ever female nomination, some women are very excited that their lives in America will change for the better. “I feel so incredibly excited. So happy, so proud,” says incoming senior Katherine Swanson. Even if Clinton becomes president, there will still be many more steps that America needs to take for women. “I think it’s a serious sign of progress for women everywhere, but it can’t stop here,” says Swanson.
We may not know who our future President will be now but we do know that women have taken a leap forward with Clinton’s nomination. We will all know that women’s lives will become much better on November 8 if Clinton becomes the ever woman President of the United States.
