Concordia Lutheran High School (CLHS) in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is well-known throughout the country. Many people remember some of the hallmarks that make CLHS unique. Graduation was only about a week ago, so looking back on these quirks is appropriate. Here are just some of anecdotes graduates from Concordia Lutheran High School can relate to.
1. The phrase, “Work is sexy”
Four words: Freshman Year Religion Class. During the unit of "Family and Friend Relationships," you ripped out a piece of paper and used the entire piece to write the phrase "Work is sexy." You then learned what this means and still use this phrase in every day life.
2. First thing seen in morning is JROTC
If you walked into school using the main doors, you remember hearing orders being yelled and seeing JROTC drill teams practicing in the gymnasium.
3. Staff uniform violations
Everyone knows that some teachers and faculty were more strict about the uniform and the dress code that went along with it, but everyone remembers the number one uniform violation: yoga pants.
4. Homecoming Week
The one week where you don't have to wear uniforms! Most people dress simple, but some people go all out. Even though students are the main source for dressing up, the school gets dressed up, as well! Each class decorates their own hallway to show their school spirit. Everyone knows that homecoming week comes complete with an assembly where you get to meet the court and see them compete in silly games.
5. The Fall Announcement: Move your car or be towed
As with every high school kid may know, marching band takes place in the fall. Everyone who has a car remembers the after school announcements about moving your car or being towed. At first you ignored it, but the closer the clock got to 3:15 p.m., you sprinted to your car to move it, just to make sure you didn't have to pay the money to get your car back.
6. Square dancing in gym class
If you were in gym class first semester, you dreaded the thought of November and December because you knew it was coming: square dancing. You were nervous to dance with someone of the opposite gender and you also remember how truly embarrassing the experience was, but hey, that's part of high school.
7. Mascot freaking people out
Our mascot isn't the traditional mascot. We don't have someone dressed up in a costume walking around at games. During home basketball games, our mascot comes onto the flour to announce Concordia's starting line up. Our mascot is four members of our JROTC program shooting blanks with the announcers. People who are unaware of this always freak out when the shots go off and all Concordia alumni always find it amusing.
8. iPad's aren't fun.
Recently, every student is required to purchase an iPad for school. At first, it seems like a good idea, right? We all thought we would get away with sneakily talking to our friends during classes a little easier. But, as we all know, not much work is completed on the iPads. The teachers caught on pretty quick, and then we got use to hearing, "Put your iPads under your desk."
9. Potential of being locked out
Everyone knows it is easier to walk outside the buildings for switching classes instead of using the stars. However, when doing this, you risk being locked out and late to class, but you didn't care because it was always the easier option.
10. Wonderful faculty and staff
Regardless of what happens in your life, there is always someone available for the students. There are many faculty and staff members who students trust and go to, not only for help with school work, but for real life advice. These faculty and staff members create the positive atmosphere you feel when you walk into school every single day.
