4 Classy DIY College Costumes

The days of focusing on piling up excessive amounts of candy are a thing of the past. College Halloweek focuses on one central question: Who are you going to be? And because Halloween is stretched out to fill up a series of events and parties, you cannot stop with one perfect response, but must come up with a conglomeration of ideas you can dress up as. Normally, college costumes are divided into two different categories: slutty or funny. Here are some options if you are looking for a classy way to bring some humor into your DIY costume.

1. Rosie the Riveter

Imagine the photo opportunities! Resembling a historical icon could be a great conversation starter at a party that is still comfortable to walk around in. It is pretty easy to pull off because all you need is a denim shirt, a red bandana and an intense bicep muscle to show off. And if any your guy friends are stumped for a new idea, you guys could make it a couple costume if he’s feeling patriotic enough to go as Uncle Sam.

2. A Board Game

Think about all of the funny jokes you could make throughout the night! Go as your favorite family board game that you spent countless hours of your childhood playing. With Twister, Operation, Candy Land, Guess Who and many others, the opportunities are endless! But please, stay away with any kind of costume that has “sexy” in front of it; nothing about scrabble should be arousing.

3. Pinterest Board

A common trend for the past couple years has been people trying to put minimal effort into clever costumes, like drawing a book on your face and going as Facebook. Although these are clever ways to start conversations at parties, it can make you look like you don’t care about the holiday. A way to look a little more creative, and a way to be a little more obvious, would be dressing up as a Pinterest Board. Grab one of those famous P red icons and make yourself a button you can wear on a white shirt. You can either get a corkboard to wear around your neck with cute Halloween costumes on it or you can just glue them right onto your clothing. Talk about something that is funny and clever while also costing minimal cash.

4. Beanie Baby
Not the funniest, but it could be a cute way to dress up as a unit if you are going out with a couple of friends. I personally took advantage of this option last year because it is a group theme that still allows for each of your personalities to shine through with the individuality of each costume. This is a slight, easy upgrade from the traditional animal costume many girls will choose to be: all you have to do is tie a TY tag and you are a beanie baby!

DIY costumes can take a lot of time and energy to create, so I would suggest getting a jumpstart on the designing process. This could be a great study break in between studying for exams and writing your English paper. But believe me, choosing to stay classy is worth the extra energy. As an overall rule for DIY costumes, duck tape is not clothing, just in case you were misguided. You don’t want to be that girl everyone is talking about the next morning.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
