10 Cincinnati Facts You Didn't Already Know, Unless You're Nati Native Through And Through

In This Article:

Anyone who was born and raised either near Cincinnati or in the region knows that there are a lot of things that make it different from any other place. Whether it's our restaurants, stores or culture, people who live in Cincinnati often don't realize that there are a lot of things in Cincinnati that you don't encounter in other states. If you're a student coming from out of state and going to college near Cincinnati, there are a few things that you'll notice that differ from your hometown.

Here are 10 unique things that you don't know about Cincinnati.

1. Most people from Cincinnati will argue about Skyline vs. Gold Star Chili.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone argue about which restaurant has better chili! If you go to any region near Cincinnati, you will see Skyline and Gold Star restaurants. One thing that Cincinnati is known for is its chili. Cincinnati is the only place that has Skyline and Gold Star Chili restaurants, which serve coneys (hot dogs with chili, cheese, onions, and mustard) or three-ways (spaghetti noodles with chili and cheese).

Both of the restaurants compete with one another, and many people will fight about which place has the best chili. I live in Fairfield, which is an hour away from Cincinnati, and I've always liked both places, but you can decide for yourself which one you think is better.

2. The weather is always unpredictable.

If you're going to Cincinnati, you'll need to know that when you think it's going to be cool, it will always be the opposite. The weather is very unpredictable. Even if you check the weather every minute, you are never able to predict what it will be like the next day. Often I'll find myself going outside in jeans only to find myself running back inside to change into shorts. The weather is something that you'll always hear people complain about.

3. In certain parts of town, there are tons of cornfields.

If you drive out of the city and don't find a cornfield, then you should consider yourself lucky. Outside Cincinnati, there are tons of regions that have a lot of cornfields, particularly Fairfield. On the plus side, during the fall the cornfields will be used as haunted mazes!

4. You'll always hear complaining about football.

Another complaint you'll hear the most is about sports, particularly football. Being a Bengals fan is complicated since one minute you'll be rooting for your team to win and the next you'll find yourself complaining about them. But people in Cincinnati can be very passionate about sports, particularly football and baseball.

5. Cincinnati has a lot of different art.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
