Christmas is one of the most overdone holidays in the world. Advertisements all over display the latest and greatest in technology and toys. Christmas isn't a time to be greedy about what wasn't under the tree. The holiday season is when you can give thanks, give back and spend time with people who love you just as much as you love them.
The holidays is when many local charities need help. There are many you can give up your time for, from serving meals to shopping for a Salvation Army Angel Tree child. Many families aren't able to give their children a Christmas like one you're used to. They don't have a big dinner or presents under the tree. Giving back should be on everyone's list of things to do this year.
After you spend your time helping others, it's time to give thanks. College students are in the most selfish times of our life. When we're at school, we only have to worry about our schedule and our work. It can be hard to come back home and live with your parents who don't have the same bed time as your roommates back at school. It's nice to come back and sleep in your own bed, have a washer that will actually clean your clothes, and a fridge full of your favorite food. These are things you become very thankful for when you're back from school.
The friends you meet in college are going to be your friends for life. But when you're home, it's great to reconnect with the people who loved you through your awkward stages. Your high school friends are the absolute best. You can be separated for such a long time, but come back and it'll be like nothing has changed. Be sure to spend time with them and catch up; they understand you better than you understand yourself sometimes. They went through everything with you.
Lastly, family. Family time is rare in college because it's hard to take a weekend trip home if you live far away. Your parents have some of the most valuable advice as you get older from relationships to financial; you should listen. They are the most constant thing you have in your life and they're they only ones you're guaranteed to have by your side for the rest of your life. Do everything with them, help around the house and just listen. They love having you around.
Christmas is the most wonderful time, take it for what it is, and don't forget to plan out your New Year's Resolutions!
