Thanksgiving has come and gone and let's face it, you rocked that food baby like there was no tomorrow. You ate plate after plate while Aunt Brenda asked about your current relationship status and Uncle Ben talked politics with your uncomfortable parents. Well, the joke's on Aunt Brenda, because you're as solo as that turkey was the day it died to become your meal, and as for Uncle Ben? Well, politics are always uncomfortable, but you had some mashed potatoes to turn to for comfort. Plates came and they went and you were victorious.
But now Thanksgiving is over, and the only thing left to look forward to is Christmas. Maybe you're Christian and you can't wait to crush it at your church on Christmas Eve. Maybe you're not, but you can't wait to dig into a ham with family and friends. Or maybe you're just super excited to give and receive some gifts that you never knew you really needed. Whatever your reasoning for getting pumped for Christmas Break and Christmas Day: the new movies to be released, the end of the year sales, the preparation for New Year's, everything; you're probably in need of some festive Christmas music.
Well, here are some suggestions from a Christmas music lover. (The following songs and albums are in no particular order and are only reflective of the author's bias.)
1. The Oh Hello's Family Christmas Album
Four movements take you back to the old Christmas hymns that maybe you knew as a child. The band plays classics with soothing acoustic guitars and bright voices. This is the perfect album to play while baking cookies with a friend and catching up after a long semester.
2. Michael Buble's Christmas Album
I mean, do I even really need to explain this? His voice was crafted by the heavens and his vocal cords have been blessed by the Pope (the latter is a little-known fact). Take this album and play it when you want to stare at a Christmas tree or while decorating the house.
3. Relient K's Silent Night Medley
In this small mash-up, Relient K takes the holiday classic, "Silent Night" and adds two more songs to it, "Away in a Manger" and "I Celebrate the Day." These songs are located on their 2007 album, "Let It Snow Baby... Let It Reindeer" and their 2003 album "Deck the Halls, Bruise your Hand," which in itself is an enthusiastic holiday album that has rock covers of Christmas classics.
4. Sam Smith's Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
Much like Michael Bublé, Sam Smith's voice is like a choir of small Renaissance angels serenading your ears with pianos, rather than harps, accompanying them. This is his Christmas single, and for that, we thank him.
There are so many more Christmas albums, filled with vocal and instrumental wonder; this small list is just the beginning. So get cracking on your holiday tuneage, and don't forget to watch Turner Classic Movie Channel to binge watch holiday classics like "Miracle on 34th Street."
