From wacky, campy road trips to cult classics to downright horror, Christmas movies abound. For better or for worse, 'tis the season for people to curl up with a mug of hot cocoa and the holiday movies they love - or love to hate! Here, in no particular order, are some of the best (and worst) Christmas movies to get you through the holiday drag this year.
1. It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
Topping the list is my personal favorite movie ever and an undeniable classic. Directed by Frank Capra, Jimmy Stewart stars in this black and white film, alongside an angel named Clarence and mean, old Mr. Potter.
IMDB rating: 8.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 94%
2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Following one classic with another comes a comedy starring Chevy Chase. If you are looking for a light-hearted family movie full of gut-busting laughs, look no further.
IMDB rating: 7.6/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 64%
3. Jingle All The Way (1996)
Though the ratings are incredibly low, if you have never seen this over-the-top slapstick comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, now is the time to add it to your list and cringe your way through.
IMDB rating: 5.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 17%
4. Krampus (2015)
Though met with lukewarm critic and audience reviews alike, this adaptation of the little-known dark side of Christmas lore is scary enough to enter into the holiday horror genre, but contains some humorous moments reminiscent of Gremlins.
IMDB rating: 6.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 65%
5. Gremlins (1984)
Speaking of Gremlins, there can't be a Christmas movie list without this film making an appearance.Set in a sleepy town, a creature known as a "mogwai" is given as an early Christmas present and accompanied by a very strict set of rules. (Which, of course, are almost immediately broken.) As Gizmo multiplies into more mogwai, their sneaky leader breaks the ultimate rule to turn them into grotesque, murderous gremlins, wreaking havoc on the town.
IMDB rating: 7.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 84%
6. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)
A movie so bad, it's good - kind of. This movie, though comically bizarre, is painful to watch, clocking in at nearly an hour and a half. However, if you watch alongside the guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000, their commentary on this film will have you in stitches.
IMDB rating: 2.5/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 24%
7. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)
This foreign film, hailing from Finland, is not your typical heartwarming holiday film. Instead, the horror-themed plot focuses on the excavation of an ancient burial mound, the slaughter of reindeer, and the disappearance of children from the local town. Naturally, a horned Santa and his devious elves are behind the mayhem.
IMDB rating: 6.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 89%
8. How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966)
Despite there being a strong division over Jim Carrey's 2000 adaptation of the beloved Dr. Seuss tale, this original animated movie is a cherished classic. The Grinch is voiced and narrated by Boris Karloff - best known as portraying Frankenstein's monster in the 1931 film, Frankenstein. Despite his following in the realm of horror, Karloff was a perfect fit to bring this story to life.
IMDB rating: 8.4/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 100%
9. Die Hard (1988)
Who hasn't seen this action-packed Christmas treasure? Also among my top favorite movies, this has to be my favorite Bruce Willis film. With dozens of quotable lines, insane explosions, and a villain you love to hate, this movie should make the list every year!
IMDB rating: 8.2/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 92%
10. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
This movie is a must-watch for those who want a murderous Santa-clad spin on their favorite holiday and can't get enough of 80's camp. With 5 movies in the franchise, each is remarkably worse than the last. But if you have to pick one to watch, the most memorable quote comes from Silent Night, Deadly Night 2: "Garbage Day!"
IMDB rating: 5.9/10
Rotten Tomatoes rating: 31%
