Christmas is often hailed for being the “most wonderful time of year.” And even though most of us don’t believe in Santa Claus anymore, the holiday still retains a certain magic. Whether it’s finding the perfect gift for your dad who’s impossible to shop for, watching “A Christmas Story” with your friends for the umpteenth time, or hosting a private Christmas pageant in your car featuring Michael Bublé and Mariah Carey, Christmas is the one time it’s appropriate to express all your fuzzy feels. For most of us, Christmas is a time of security, a time to be surrounded by loved ones (however dysfunctional they may be). However, for many others, Christmas is a time when the evil Santa of the movie Santa’s Slay comes out of the woodwork and the danger of the holiday becomes fully realized.
You Better Watch Out…
-52% of annual fatal car accidents occur on Christmas Day (mostly as a result of people driving intoxicated. Many of these accidents are completely preventable).
-According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), “more than 80,000 people a year need hospital treatment for injuries such as falls, cuts, and burns, during the festive period”.
-People are 50% more likely to die in a house fire over Christmas than at any other time of year as a result of candle and light mishaps.
-Each year about 1,000 people are injured when decorating their Christmas trees (mostly when putting stars, lights, and other decorations on the higher branches).
-About 350 people a year are hurt by Christmas tree lights, according to the RoSPA. The most common injuries include children swallowing Christmas tree light bulbs and people getting electric shocks from the lights.
-As romantic as mistletoe is, it can be poisonous! The berries on the plant contain toxic proteins that can lead to a slower heart rate and hallucinations.
-The British Nutrition Foundation found that on average people gain 5 pounds during the Christmas season. Another study found that people eat their daily recommended calorie intake by 2 PM on Christmas Day and that most people on average eat 7,000 calories throughout the day! Make your health a priority and eat as cleanly as you can!
-The Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Nationwide’s Children Hospital found that every three minutes, a child sustains a toy related injury. Without supervision, many small children will choke on the toys they find under their trees this Christmas.
Christmas can truly be a joyous time, if proper precautions are taken. Drink, decorate, and gift wisely because
Santa Claus is coming to town!
