We’ve heard the verses and sang the songs, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness...Christ alone, Cornerstone…” Having Christ as our cornerstone sounds nice and religious, but what does it mean?
Literally, a cornerstone was the principal stone placed at the corner of the building. It was the largest, most solid, and most important stone and was the reference for the position for all other smaller stones. Without this foundation, the building would not remain, if completed it would be chaotic without this reference point.
So, if we replace ‘Christ’ with ‘cornerstone’ then we see that He is our foundation in which all other aspects of our lives (or little stones) is built upon. Without Him, our lives are chaotic and unorganized. This is definitely true for me, it may not be true for you right now, but eventually your building of too many small stones is gonna come crashing down.
So, how do we make Christ our cornerstone? By seeking Him first and making him the most important aspect of our lives. “Seek first His kingdom and all these things will be given to you as well” Matthew 6:33 “These things” as described here in Matthew are the smaller, less important stones in the building that is our life. Jesus was telling us earlier in the passage to not worry about what we will eat or drink or what we will wear…for me this looks like worrying about my grades and paying for dues, food, and of course, coffee. By seeking Him and resting in Jesus, my Cornerstone, I don’t have to worry about my little stones and they don’t seem as important (like they should).
With such a secure foundation, when one little aspect of our life crumbles, we can patch up the weak spot without our whole life falling apart. Without a cornerstone so sure, steady, and unfailing as Jesus, when one stone gives way it is going to create a domino effect that causes all the other weak and wobbly stones to come down. When stones such as classes and grades, finances, and relationships break, our Cornerstone remains still and we can always rebuild. “..a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.” (Isaiah 28:16)
