With this current election coming up in November, there has been a lot of drama so far. Between Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Ted Cruz, we have enough drama to film a television show. It’s been a whirlwind since each candidate announced that they would be running for president. And many people have broadcast their views on each hopeful candidate, some good and some bad. And this election has been one of the craziest elections yet.
Since last year, I have been a registered voter and I was really excited for this year’s presidential election. I was excited about having the privilege to helping decide on our future president. But when I started hearing about the hopeful presidential candidates and their stances on certain topics, I wasn't so sure what to think.
I am not registered as a Democrat or Republican. When I registered over a year ago, I registered as an Independent voter. My parents are also Independent voters, they also chose not to be a part of either major parties. My parent’s political stance swayed me into becoming an Independent voter.
Being an Independent voter means that we can’t vote in the primaries in our home state. But that gives us an advantage in the election. Ever since the candidates started becoming vocal in their stances on why they should be elected for their party to run for president, it gives us a chance to feel out the candidates.
I am glad that I am not registered with a specific party. With everything that has been happening so far this year concerning the election, it is best to have an open mind about the candidates. Between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, there has been a lot of controversy. Quite a few people have proclaimed why they do not think Trump would make a good president. They are also making jokes about what would happen if Trump did become president. As for Hillary, there are some people who do not think she would not make a good president for certain reasons.
With this current election, it is a good thing for me, an inexperienced voter, to be an Independent voter. With everything that is being talked about from the hopeful candidates, it is better for me to sit back and not worry about the primaries. When the two candidates will be announced, I will go into research and look at what the two presidential candidates support and believe what they can do to better our country, without angering the citizens.
And once I have done my research and decide on who I want to be President, I will go and vote. But being Independent helps me and gives me the advantage to understand the prospective candidates views and how I feel about it. I have certain hopes for the country and I have strong views and stances on certain topics. If one of the candidates has the same views as me on healthcare or education, I would be more interested in voting for them. If both of the candidates shared my views on many of the same topics, it would make the decision harder, but both of their views would differ based on their political stance.
Overall, I am glad that I am an Independent voter. I am able to have an open mind on the candidates throughout the course of the election over the year. And with an open mind, I would be able to make an informed decision on who I think would make a great President for our country.
