I have never been one to be amused by people sharing their views on celebrities or funny memes on the same subject or about their pets. My argument was that there is so many things out there that need our attention more than Kanye’s Twitter rants or what Taylor Swift said to taunt Mr. West at The Grammy’s. I have however changed my view on this topic and believe that a fair amount of such news and memes are healthy.
I have grown up to love politics and news in general, so I would say I am a well-informed person in that sector, but anyone who shares my interests in “serious news” knows that such news can be very depressing if one lets it get to them. I was always told, “Work without play makes Jack a dull boy.” I am beginning to believe that the saying is true. Ever scrolled down to the comment section on a post by CNN or any major news network about the current presidential race? All you find is insults and more insults. It makes one wonder whether America is deciding or dividing. So, is “serious news” even healthy?
On the other hand, remember the “Drake vs Meek Mill” beef? That was the turning point of my view on celebrity news. The memes were hilarious. Reading about the beef put a slight mischievous grin on my face which rarely happens when I am reading about what Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump are up to. It got me thinking, sometimes human beings need to look at the lighter side of life, but by no means forget about the pressing issues. It’s all about balance. #TEAMDRAKE
I have a friend who mostly reads sports news, which is what entertains him. The day I noticed he did not have a mainstream news app on his phone, I was shocked. It’s the norm for me to have up to five news apps and maybe two sports apps. Why was this the case? All he had to say was, “I am a happy guy, and I want to stay that way. With news apps you get constant BREAKING NEWS notifications and 9 out of 10 times it is bad news. I am just not the guy to deal with that. If something serious need my attention, I would rather research about the issue myself, and with all these people ranting on social media, I am bound to notice if something big happens.” I did not agree with him fully, but I did try and see things from his eyes. My point is, sports is also another way to “detox” from all the issues around us.
Entertainment news is just that, entertainment news. So let us enjoy it and not fret over the fact that there are more serious things in the world. No one denies that sometimes it’s good to get that grin or laugh because we are human beings not rocks. Let us not be too rigid.
