There are multiple student leader organizations on campus around move-in time, but Welcome Week Leaders definitely have some distinct characteristics..
One in every five leaders has a selfie stick, and yes, of course, we will be using it.
We will give the freshmen a high five even if it is the fifth time we’ve seen that freshman today.
No, we are not getting paid—we are just enjoying free food and T-shirts with our friends.
We say “woo” entirely too much to pump everyone up.
We returners get older each year that passes, but we still act like we are 12 when we all corral freshmen for ice breakers.
We travel in packs.
We are often seen napping in the student lounge during a break.
We are offended if you do not say “thank you” when we are holding the door open.
We lead chants, and very loudly at that.
We like to say “woo".
Heck yeah, we work the corner—giving directions around campus for check-in.
Have I mentioned “woo!”?
That pretty much covers it. We love our job and helping the new freshmen get acquainted with the campus, and by the end of our time as leaders during Welcome Week, we've all become quite the close-knit family and know many more people than we did before.
