Why Changing Your Major Isn't A Bad Thing

As simple as it sounds, you have to do what makes you happy.

I feel like changing your major gets a bad reputation. I get the reasons behind this idea too. More classes can cost more money if a lot of your classes don't transfer over to your new major. It can also cost you more time. You can end up being 5th or 6th year senior. It can also be a lot of extra work if you're taking multiple difficult classes all at once to try and graduate on time. It also doesn't help when people say "Are you really changing your major again? or " Wow, you're a sophomore/ junior and you're taking this class?"

The hardest part is watching the people who seem like they have it all figured out and have known what they wanted to be since the 6th grade. It's hard watching them get ahead while you feel like you're so behind. It's weird being a sophomore or junior in classes with all freshman who figured out what they wanted to do before they came to college. Despite all the craziness and difficulty you might face; changing your major is not a negative thing. In fact, it will be the best decision you'll ever make if you finally come to a place were you feel content with what you're doing and where your life is going.

I was afraid to change my major to anything vastly different than what I was already doing. I was scared about time, money, or the major simply being too hard for me. I was scared I would already be behind. I was scared of the hard work that it was going to take to catch up. Then all of a sudden these things became so minor in light of the fact that I wanted to be happy in whatever I did everyday for the rest of my life. I wanted to enjoy it, and I knew my previous major wasn't going to give me that. I knew it had to change, and it is one of the best decisions I've made in a while.

Once you're there and you realize it's what you want then all of the extra time and effort seems worth it. The feeling of being content with the direction my life is going is more fulfilling than anything my previous major would have given me. It's so strange how all that fear just goes away and all of sudden you're just doing it. You're working hard and you're exhausted, but you're just doing it because it's what you have to do to get what you want. It also gives you an amazing feeling of accomplishment because you're succeeding at something that previously felt impossible due to whatever dumb excuse you were making.

So what I'm really saying is that you have to do what's best for you. No matter how impossible or how difficult it may seem, it is never too late to change your major. If you're not happy where you're at then don't be afraid to make a change. A few difficult years now is going to be so worth it in the long run if you can wake up every morning knowing that you're exactly where you're supposed to be.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
