When it comes to washing hair, you either already don’t wash your hair or you might think that’s the grossest thing anyone’s every suggested, like ever. Don’t stop reading, because I’m not going to flat out tell you to stop washing your hair for forever! Washing your hair is a tricky subject among many, mostly because people either don’t know why they shouldn’t be washing their hair or they think it’s gross. Time to address both concerns to set the record straight!
If you’ve dealt with oily hair that seems to continue to be oily even if you wash it an hour later, then you should stop washing. If your hair seems dry, and there’s actually no oiliness to your hair, stop washing. If your hair is too flat to do anything with, stop washing! You get the picture. But why, you ask? If you continuously have oily hair, no matter how many times you’ve washed your hair, it’s because the oil glands on your head are trying to overcompensate for the oil that is being stripped when you shampoo so often. When you wash your hair every day, there isn’t any natural oil left for your hair to thrive off of, so you should wash only every other day. If your hair is dry, it’s because of the same reason — the oil is getting stripped because of too much washing. If your hair is flat, it’s because of all of the above, stripped oil.
If you know washing your hair every day is bad but think it’s gross, let me introduce you to a new concept product! I learned about all the wonders product could do only a few years ago, and when I did, my hair life changed! Dry shampoo is your best friend when it comes to not washing often. Some think that dry shampoo just covers the oil, so your hair is still dirty, but that’s not true at all! The right dry shampoo will soak the oil up in your hair and give it body, leaving it feeling and looking fresh. Since I’ve not been washing my hair often for a few years now, I’ve figured out my favorite dry shampoos and other products. When looking for a dry shampoo, it’s important to consider what you want from it. Because my hair is flat, I like a dry shampoo that soaks up my oil and gives me volume. My favorite for this is Batiste, which can be found at Walgreens and UrbanOutfitters.com. If your hair already has volume and you just want to get rid of oil, Pssssss! is for you.
Now that you know the facts about why you shouldn’t wash and the right products to help with not washing, it’s time to figure out how you actually do this, the correct way. To be honest, it takes time to train your hair. When I started skipping washes, I began with every other day. I would (of course) take a shower every day, but put my hair in a ponytail or shower cap and just not wash it or get it wet. I did this for a few weeks and eventually was able to go about 3 days without washing, and it still looked good and clean. In between washes, just add dry shampoo and you’re good to go! After a while, you’ll notice how much healthier your hair will be, because it finally will be able to nourish itself with its own oil and not be starved for it. Hopefully this has cleared up confusion about why you shouldn’t wash your hair often, and has inspired you to skip a wash tonight. I promise, your hair will thank you.
