Thousands have made the trip to see the heavily anticipated Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The series who last film, Revenge of the Sith, was actually a prequel to the original installments that premiered in 1977. This means the last time the original principles held their roles was in 1983's Return of the Jedi, 32 years ago.
Nevertheless, both journalists and individuals around social media seemed less than pleased with Carrie Fisher's physical appearance in the film. With one twitter user venting, "You didn't age well and you sucked in Star Wars... Want my money back."
Comments such as the one above inspired Fisher to speak staunchly against body shaming, which is just one of many reasons to take some advice from her.
1. "My body is my brain bag"
With her recent set of tweets, Fisher goes after the complex of the entertainment industry, dismantling the idea that looks are the only valuable asset in Hollywood. Her career speaks volumes against the norm, she has proven herself to be a valuable and diverse entity in the industry not only as an actress but also as an author. Many of the other quotations listed here come from her play turned autobiography Wishful Drinking.
2. "Youth and beauty are not accomplishments."
Another installment from her recent tweets has Fisher going after the idea that women are only valuable if they fit into our society's ideals for women. Especially with celebrities, we expect women to remain exceptionally youthful into their later years and find fault if they do not. This is Fisher fighting directly against the two forces working against her, ageism and sexism. In an industry that treats plump breasts and line-less foreheads like prizes, Carrie Fisher is here to set the record straight.
3. "I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance."
If it was not clear enough from the last two quotes Fisher resorted to being blunt about the issue in her interview with Good Housekeeping. This interview became the subject of heavy criticism, with one journalist penning an article titled, "If Carrie Fisher doesn't like being judged on her looks, she should quit acting."
4. "If you're living with [bipolar disorder] and functioning at all, it's something to be proud of"
Perhaps, even more, important than lending her voice to the movement against body shaming, Fisher has long been vocal about her mental health. Most importantly, she has used her voice to lift those who share her struggle. She goes on to say that, "they should issue medals along with the steady stream of medication."
5. "I don't want to be a victim"
I am sure this quote rings true for everyone reading, none of us want to have to succumb to our weaknesses and as someone who came close to the brink, Fisher knows the difference between letting hard times consume you and letting them go. "The one's who don't laugh... are heavy and devastated and they're having a shit time. Whereas I'm like, get me to the funny bar... If I can be funny, thank you, please God, then let me," she told "The Guardian" back in 2004. She's clearly been living her advice since.
6. "Happy is one of the many things I'm likely to be over the course of a day and certainly over the course of a lifetime. But... if you have a need to be comfortable all the time–well, among other things, you have the makings of a classic drug addict or alcoholic"
A blunt but valid comparison between the need to feel content and addiction. Fisher speaks on her old addictions by confronting one of its sources and interjecting a bit of humor as well.
7. "I'm fine, but I'm bipolar"
This is important to hear, especially for the mentally ill community. Too often, are they treated as though their condition no longer exists just because they look fine. Fisher shows just how very real these conditions are as she continues, "I'm on seven medications, and I take medication three times a day. This constantly puts me in touch with the illness I have. I'm never quite allowed to be free of that for a day."
Bonus: "Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Unfortunately, it hurts all three of my feelings."
I wouldn't get on the dark side of her three feelings if I was you.
