How to stay motivated with online classes

ASU went online for the rest of the semester and I sit there wondering where to find the motivation to actually pay attention to the online classes and get my work done the same way I used to when I had in person classes.

The virus is inevitable but the lack of motivation is a setback.

I was sitting there staring at my computer screen, seeing all my classmates, and thinking to myself "This sucks."

It does suck and not only am I losing my education but I am also losing the second half of my freshman year. I didn't think that my freshman year would end like this and thinking about all the things that I could have done but won't get the chance to do so truly hurts.

So here is what I've thought about:

I need to gain back my motivation and because we are all in the same boat, I have compiled a list of things that I am doing that are helping my motivation come back on track.

1. Making to-do lists

This is the best way to stay motivated. If you make a to-do list you can cross things off and see the result of the work that you are doing. Making to-do lists helps me stay on top of things but also makes me feel good when I see I've gotten everything done that I needed to do.

2. Copy new dates in your calendar

Chances are that your teachers have given you new due dates and postponed some things. Copying down these new dates will keep them fresh in your mind and also help you stay on top of your tasks. Knowing the dates should actually bring the needed motivation.

3. Cook!

This might be an odd one but hear me out. Cooking is super fun and it can also help you take a break from regular school activities. It also helps you stay creative and do something that will trigger a different part of your brain to work. I think that cooking is a great way to relax and to also build up the skill for use later in life.

4. Make weekly playlists.

This is something that I've been trying to do and I find highly beneficial. I think that music lifts the mood in ways that we didn't know we need sometimes. Making a weekly playlist not only helps your creative juices flow, but it also allows you to stay motivated and pick songs that you know will get you out of bed and do that long awaited homework.

5. Reward yourself.

After you do some homework, reward yourself. Give yourself two episodes of a show you like to watch or even take your pets on a walk if you are tired of laying around the house all day.

I know that's very minimal but this helps me stay motivated. I know this situation is not at all ideal and it can bring more negative thoughts than happy ones. What you should focus on right now is the good that this situation is bringing. These five things could help you see the world a little brighter and give you back the motivation you were missing out on.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
