My mom offered me some great advice over the years. Whether she gave me tips on how to correctly cook a favorite dish or advice on how to correctly drive from one place to another, she has been a type of wealth of knowledge of wisdom for me over the years. Of course, now that I have typed this out and admitted it on the Internet, I will never hear the end of it. However, despite the teasing, it is very true; she has offered both my dad and me countless pieces of advice that have never ceased to be helpful. However, there is always one saying she would repeat that really stuck out to me. Whenever I felt overwhelmed at the immense amount of chores or bits of work I had to do, she would always say: "Rebecca, just take it one day at a time and you will get through it."
That is a piece of advice, I have found, that is applicable to more and more areas of my life as time goes on. Specifically, I find that one could relate it heavily to the idea of careers and passions. If you take your long term goal or career and break it down into little steps along the way, it suddenly becomes a lot more achievable and a lot less intimidating in the long run. For me, that is how I see the entirety of Campus Movie Fests.
Campus Movie Fest is an event hosted by colleges and universities across the country. Event authorities will come to participating schools with filming equipment gifts of all sorts. Students, then, are invited to rent out these recording items and go out to create a short film of their choosing with as many or as few people as possible. Students will then create, film, edit, and turn in a finished product for a panel of judges. From here, judges will rank and class films in terms of acting, directing, and overall quality
As expected this filming event, due to its description, is invested completely in the idea of creativity. It encourages students to express themselves in ways they probably haven't been invited to do before with equipment that is usually harder to obtain. After all, students now become part of the entire filming process from story concept, to scriptwriting, to acting, to filming and even to the editing. The Campus Movie Fest, then, is not only an exploration of student-made talent, but it is also an exploration of fields and skillsets found within the filmmaking industry.
However, at least for me, this is not the only things achieved by Campus Movie Fest. I still remember the advice that my mom gave me. The phrase "take it one day at a time" is a constant reminder to take a deep breath and focus on the things I can control at the moment. That is why, in my opinion, Campus Movie Fest is so important to young people interested in film making; it can be considered the first step for many film enthusiasts. After all, future filmmakers of America have to dream big in order to get into their desired industry. Everyone who wants to go into the film industry imagines their name up in lights, but, at the moment, that is something that is out of their control.
Instead of looking to a far off future, however, young filmmakers are given an outlet to control what they can do today. Today, they may not be able to work in Hollywood or talk to their most treasured film idol. Today, they probably can't travel across the country to work in Hollywood. Today, they probably don't have a completed, million-dollar idea. However, today they have a movie camera. Today, they have access to a script and other film enthusiasts. Today, they have a small stepping stone in the overall path of their film career.
Campus Movie Fest is important because it works on building the tomorrow by focusing on the today.
