6 Things Joining A Campus Ministry Taught me

6 Things Joining A Campus Ministry Taught me

It took me months during my freshman year to find the people who I wanted to be around for the rest of my college career. I didn't want to go outside of my comfort zone and search for those people. I felt as though if I waited, I would find my crowd and those who were meant to be apart of my life. Waiting for these girls was the best decision I have ever made.

After waiting around for these girls to come to me and stepping out of my comfort zone by joining a campus ministry, I learned a few things.

1. You'll always have someone to look up to

Shaylie Woodford

Much like joining a sorority, joining a campus ministry allows you to have "bigs" or other big roles to look up to and depend on.

2. You'll always have a dinner date (or 17)

Shaylie Woodford

You'll never have to worry about eating alone ever again. You will always have a judgement free zone full of girls who are willing to eat their body weight in alfredo and appetizers.

3. You'll always laugh

Shaylie Woodford

And you'll always have someone to adore. As long as you take your time and wait for God to place these girls in your path, you'll always have someone to laugh with, laugh at, and adore.

4. You'll always have someone to take candids of you

Shaylie Woodford

And by candids, I mean "candids."

5. You'll always have someone to volunteer with

Shaylie Woodford

Being involved with these women has allowed me to volunteer within my community in ways that I wouldn't have without them.

6. You'll always have a soul mate

It wasn't until I joined Chi Alpha and this small group that I found my soul mates.

Sometimes, you just have to step outside of your comfort zone and join the ministry, join the club, etc., in order to find "your people."

It's like love. If you wait long enough, God will place the right people in your life at the right time. The best things in life come when you least expect it. So don't go searching for your people, let "your people" come to you. Trust me, they will, and when they do, you'll be so glad that you waited.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
