I'm back for my regularly scheduled ridicule of absurd beauty trends that Instagram has forced me to try.
The latest: eyebrow shapers. This is what they look like.
I've been seeing these little shits all over Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. They claim to "trim your eyebrows safely and painlessly like a professional makeup artist, featuring a tiny razor with protective skin guard for precision shaping". These Studio35 Beauty ones even claim that you can use them on all facial hair, in addition to your bikini area. Painlessly. This has to be too good to be true, right?
Well, I decided to find out for myself.
I purchased the exact same 3-pack of Studio35 eyebrow shapers pictured above at Walmart for, like, $2.00. You can find them at Walgreens for around $6.00, or on Amazon for $10.00. I have no idea how they get off charging that much money for these pieces of plastic. Anyway.
They sat around on my vanity until about a week ago, when I saw one of my favorite Fashion and Beauty pages, The Revelist, use one of these babies. With a couple of strokes, the girl in the video had some impressively defined brows, without any of the pain of waxing or tweezing. I was dumbfounded. Mostly because I'd had these things sitting in my bathroom for months, while my eyebrows had grown to revolting lengths because I'm too broke to get a professional wax. So, I began on my journey to tame these beasts and shape the eyebrows of my dreams.
This is what I began with.
My brows weren't necessarily too messy, but they needed work. I'm a girl who draws my eyebrows on every day (mainly because my brows are blonde and my hair is dyed black). I've been going to the salon for years, begging them to wax my brows to make them THINNER and to GET RID OF THE ARCH. Those have been my only requests - to no avail. I always end up coming out looking surprised. With an arch. When I draw on my eyebrows, I much prefer that "straight" look:
Like this.
Barely any arch. No crazy upside-down "V" shape. Nice and straight - that's how I like it. But how would I ever achieve this with my naturally arched brows? That no stylist would ever follow my directions to get rid of? I had to take it into my own hands. And by "it", I mean, the eyebrow shaper.
After slathering lotion onto my brows and a few minutes of trying to figure out the correct angle on which to shave the hairs, I was ready. Ready for the painless, precise hair removal.
This is what I ended up with.
So, let me ask you a question.
Does that look painless to you?
SPOILER: It wasn't.
It hurt like a bitch at times, I will not lie to you. You can see from the picture that my eyebrow area was red and swollen. It's difficult to tell, but there was some minor bleeding in two or three spots, as well. So all the girls on Instagram that claim that eyebrow shapers are a "painless hair removal" product sent from God himself are lying straight to our faces.
However, I must say, I am extraordinarily pleased by the result. My arch is gone, and I even straightened up the front part of my brow - giving me that crisp, clean, defined look that my waxer has never been able to provide.
So here's the final verdict.
Are brow shapers totally painless? No.
Are they less painful than waxing, tweezing, or threading? YES.
Did it effectively remove the eyebrow hair? It took a decent amount of elbow grease, but yes. It did. It's all about finding the right angle - shave in the direction of hair growth, with the blade almost parallel to your skin.
How long does it last? Longer than tweezing, but not as long as threading or waxing. Probably between 1-2 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows.
Are they Becca™ approved? All in all, yes. They totally are. While my brows were sore for a couple of hours, it was totally worth it. I didn't have to shell out the cash for a wax or a thread, and the pain was a fraction of what it would've been if I had TWEEZED all that hair off (yikes). In the end, I got exactly the result I wanted - with minimal pain - for $2.00.
In the end, my brows were definitely straight and Instagram-worthy the next day.
So, yes. Go buy yourself some eyebrow shapers. But I'd probably pick up some Band-Aids while you're at it - just in case.
