A damsel in distress
A butterfly in a dirty garden
Trying to fly trying to get nectar
But the plants are dead
She doesn’t have any food
Soon she will die if she doesn’t get nectar
Then the farmer comes along
She plants some flowers
They aren’t beautiful yet
They have the potential to be beautiful
5 years and the flowers start to grow
They grow from the dirt
Constantly getting dirty from the wind blowing the soil
Constantly getting cleansed from the rain
Always changing.
One day the butterfly finally gets to taste the nectar
The warmth in her mouth and the smell of the flower makes her year
She can now be a happy butterfly who has enough strength fly high in the sky
She can go to a different cleaner place with lots of flowers and loving farmers maybe one day she’ll feel beautiful herself on the inside that is
Because she is beautiful on the outside
It’s a butterfly we are talking about come on
No one may think a butterfly could be ugly
They have such beautiful wings
Such detailed symmetric colors
No butterfly is the same
Each is unique and different in their own way
But maybe not every ‘beautiful’ butterfly feels the same way
However, what the butterflies have in common is change
They all started as an egg
And then they turned into caterpillars
But she wasn’t able to sprout her wings when she was a small caterpillar
Instead she clung to the tree like it was her lifeline
She may have been beautifully unique and able to blend in with any environment
But she couldn’t fly yet
It took some isolation until she became a butterfly
She was safely rested until she was strong enough to blossom
The storms came.
She was rocked and rocked in that cocoon
She couldn’t see beyond the pain of being stuck inside that cocoon
She endured so much pain and didn’t get to see the rainbow, not yet.
Soil was thrown in her face constantly
There was so much wind at one point she almost fell off the tree
If she fell off all her hard work of hatching into a butterfly would be gone
The farmer would miss her
It would have all been for nothing
But then the wind finally pushed her back to the other side and the balance she had on the tree was restored
Months that felt like 5 years finally passed
She came out of the cocoon and sprouted her wings
Its impossible for her to see her wings though
Because butterflies can’t turn their heads
But she felt beautiful without even knowing how beautiful she was
Although she didn’t have the privilege of seeing her wings she did have the privilege of being able to fly
The right to be free.
To feel happy
Maybe not happy enough to be the same bubbly butterfly she was before the storm came
But she now has enough happiness to smile and get through life
To fly above her struggles
Seek shelter in storms
And to be who she is.
