If you know me, you know I am a fan of Rob Bell.
If you don't like Rob Bell, that's cool.
If you don't know who Rob Bell is, that's cool too. Google it.
Rob puts out a (mostly) weekly podcast, which he has titled the Robcast (of course) and I am a huge fan.
I could go on, but I will not.
Recently, in one of the Robcast episodes I listened to, I latched on to the idea that Rob often brings up, the idea that the bush is always burning.
Is there literally a bush on fire, right and left, wherever we go, putting our lives in danger?
Eh, not exactly.
If you have spent any time in a "Christian circle" or opened the Bible at all, you may have heard the story of the burning bush, found early on in the book of Exodus. Moses is hanging around, being Moses and what not, when a bush catches on fire near him...but the bush is not destroyed. It is on fire, but the fire doesn't consume it. The bush is still in tact. And then he discovers that this bush on fire, this bush that is not being destroyed, has a voice, it is his God.
The bush is on fire, but not being devoured. And now the bush is delivering a message, as most bushes do.
At this point, God continues on to tell his son, Moses, that he is standing on holy ground, that where he is standing is in fact a sacred thing, he is in a special space.
And then God sends Moses out, with an important cause, a significant job. Moses isn't sent alone, but the spirit of the Lord goes with him.
And it all appears to begin with Moses finding a bush that is burning.
Typical, am I right?
But what if the bush is always burning?
What if God is always around us, always with us?
What if everywhere we go can be holy ground?
There is no space too defiled or insignificant or old that it cannot become ground that is sacred. A space where we see God at work, where the bush is burning constantly.
What if the bush is always burning around us, and we just do not yet have eyes to see it?
Then the issue becomes training our eyes to see the bushes all around us, burning, on fire, but not devoured. Seeing and experiencing the holy ground, probably right where we are standing.
That is possible. There is a Master Teacher walking alongside you. A Teacher who is well equipped to train you to see the bushes.
May you walk alongside your Creator, and may you train your eyes to see the bushes, the bushes that are always burning.
