Think back to the '90s: a golden age for video games. Every other game on the market was a side-scrolling platformer. Then, the world of video games broke into a new dimension: the third dimension.
With lackluster releases such as "Mario 64," "Banjo Kazooie" and "Donkey Kong 64," the world was ready for a new game to break the same boring mold that the two dimensional world had left behind. "Bubsy 3D" was the game to do just that.
Our story begins with "Bubsy 3D," a simple and brave platformer in a world where platforming was beginning to be destroyed by first person shooting. "Bubsy" was a ground breaking game for its time. It had minutes, perhaps hours, dedicated to its complex programming. The controls were ahead of its time, and the story was something that we hadn't seen in a long while. But we aren't here to talk about "Bubsy 3D," we are here to talk about what "Bubsy" inspired.
"Bubsy 4D" is a game designed by a small, Clark University run company. The company Mhmm LLC is a small company inside of Clark University consisting of three major members, two of whom started the company back in 2015. The two initial founders of the company are Mathew 'Danger' Pedersen, and Spencer 'Danger' Biddle. Pedersen is the lead programmer for the company. Pedersen was often heard talking about recreating his favorite game from his childhood for many months before the company was created. Pedersen was quoted saying, "I grew up with 'Bubsy.' 'Bubsy' is my jam, man."
Biddle had actually never programmed before working on the "Bubsy" project. Biddle has been quoted saying, "I didn't do any programming [on "Bubsy 4D"]. Or did I? I don't remember, it was a long time. It was good." Biddle was the big man behind the scenes. He directed Pedersen and gave him important input on the game's mechanics. It was Biddle's idea to put the haunted skeleton in that HARDCORE fans of the series remember from previous "Bubsy" entrees. Biddle was in charge of directing the one and only voice actor for the game, Dan 'What do you mean' Anisfeld.
I, Cameron 'Menubrian' Mitchell, was an early backer of Mhmm LLC. It was my equipment that was used to create the legend that is Bubsy 4D. Some gameplay footage of "Bubsy 4D" can be seen below.
I'm proud to say that I have now joined the Development team, and we are starting on a new project that is currently in the works. Here is a leaked photo of what we've been working on so far.
See you at E3 2017.
