A staple on the southern brunch menu, the chicken biscuit is usually the shining choice on a late Saturday or Sunday morning. After spending the summer abroad, I realized that what I missed most, after family and friends of course, was the deliciously classic chicken biscuit from my home state. Upon my return, I made it my mission to try and find the best chicken biscuit in Atlanta.
Chick-fil-A:
Let’s begin with the arguably most nationally renowned biscuit. A fast food staple in the south, Chick-fil-A serves chicken in almost any way. My favorite, the chicken biscuit, is unfortunately only available from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. While I sometimes don’t make the cut on a Saturday morning, these bad boys are worth waking up for. Their typical fried chicken is served on a warm crumbly biscuit. I suggest adding Chick-Fil-a sauce on top; it really makes it the best.
Oddbird:
A menu devoted to fried chicken, Oddbird has some amazing choices when it comes to the chicken biscuit. From the typical Nashville hot chicken, to a chicken biscuit with cheese and apple jam, the selection here does not disappoint. Unfortunately, Oddbird is only open in the evenings, which doesn’t bother me too much, as I can’t help craving the chicken biscuit at all times of the day. My personal favorite, the Chicken Biscuit #2, is served with a very spicy honey and sweet b&b pickles. Another personal tip: Order the hush puppies. They are truly scrumptious!
Ladybird Grove and Mess Hall:
One of the coolest spots I’ve been to in Atlanta recently. Eating at Ladybird feels like a retreat from a campsite, all while being 10 minutes away from the heart of Atlanta. Situated on the Beltline, Ladybird serves a yummy but limited brunch menu. It didn’t bother me that there were not too many choices as soon as my eyes landed on the chicken biscuit. Served drenched in hot sauce with crunchy pickles on a soft biscuit, this sandwich should not be missed. They serve Octane Coffee, so be sure to order a cup to pair perfectly with your chicken biscuit!
Homegrown:
Hidden near Cabbagetown, Homegrown is an excellent find. While I had not heard of it before going there, the place was completely packed. The vibe is definitely eclectic and I enjoyed the complimentary xylophone music played live just across from our table. I originally arrived with intentions to get the Comfy Chicken Biscuit, but after seeing how giant it was, I had to find a partner to share it. Unfortunately, I was with a bunch of pancake lovers who enjoyed their fluffy enormous pancakes, and I chose to order the simple fried chicken biscuit with cheddar off the sides menu. It turned out to be a great choice: The biscuit was soft and fluffy, and the chicken was piled high. With a little honey on the side, this authentic southern cooking was just divine.
Buttermilk Kitchen:
This restaurant has my personal favorite among all chicken biscuits. One of my favorite spots in Atlanta, Buttermilk Kitchen serves the best biscuits I have ever tasted. Crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, these biscuits would make absolutely anything served on top of them taste good. Perfectly fried, the chicken is smothered with red pepper jelly and homemade pickles. I truly cannot describe how well crafted this dish is, but I have instagrammed it multiple times if that gives a better depiction. Pair it with a side of their pimento cheese grits, and it’s a southern feast you cannot help but shed a tear for.
I hope to continue this journey in search for the best chicken biscuit. But so far, the city of Atlanta has served me well, and I look forward to every brunch opportunity.
