In case you haven’t seen it, the White House and CollegeHumor produced a video this week to raise sexual assault awareness as a part of their "It's On Us" campaign.
The video features five hilarious actors, Jake Johnson, Rob Riggle, David Walton, Lamorne Morris, and Steve Berg, who are all watching a football game together in a man cave. One of the guys goes to get a beer from the fridge upstairs, and realizes there is a bear in the house. The bear is threatening attack, breaks down the door of the man cave, and enters the room. There is screaming and shouting, and everyone is offended Johnson’s character didn’t warn them. As Johnson yells out, "But you know, it's not going to eat all of us, it's only going to eat like one in five!” He then goes on to exclaim, "You guys know the old saying, bears will be bears!" Morris combats this with, "That's not a saying!" As Johnson responds, "What happened between you guys and the bear is none of my business," his company is terrified and disgusted.
When asked about the thought process behind the video, Johnson said, "As a bro, you kind of look the other way and there's a line a bro won't cross against another bro...I think that is so tired." The thought that not only Johnson feels this way, but that enough people feel like some people, called "bros" in this case, don't care enough about women to stand up and call out their friends that a video needs to be made makes my stomach churn. The mindset that women aren't worth calling out your so-called "friend" for violating them is absolutely wretched.
Everyone knows how terrible the statistics are. Twenty percent of women will be sexually assaulted by the time they finish college. Think of the five women in your life you care most about: your sister, your cousin, your mom, your best friend, your girlfriend. Statistically, one of them will be assaulted; one of them will have their safety threatened; one of them will be violated in such a carnal, animalistic way that may affect them physically, emotionally, mentally, etc.; one of them will be a victim.
In case there are some bros out there that are unaware of how consent works, here's a great video that explains it using tea. If people don't want tea, don't make them drink it.
If your bros are assaulting women, they're probably not good friends anyway. Stand up for women; wouldn't you want someone to stand up for the women in your life when you can't be there?
