On November 1, AMC announced they’d be releasing a 10 episode season of the Vertigo comic "Preacher"set to premiere on May 22.
The show is executively produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and will have consultation from writers Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon But why does this matter when you’re probably still mad at AMC for the Negan cliffhanger? Let’s forget about "The Walking Dead" for a minute, and understand that AMC and quality shows go hand in hand so if you don’t know what "Preacher" is, you at least know it’ll be good.
"Preacher" is a 1996- 2000 comic (AMC has a thing for comics) which is anything but holy. The series is set in Texas focuses on Reverend Jesse Custer who becomes the only survivor of an (supernatural) explosion in his church only to find out that the being that caused the explosion (an angel-demon hybrid named Genesis) granted him a power called “The Word". The comic itself follows Jesse on his search for God as he runs into the angel of death, abusive family members, a serial killer out to frame Jesse, and a cult protecting the bloodline of Jesus.
"The Word” allows Jesse to make people do whatever he says indefinitely, which Jesse uses on his search for God, who fled Heaven after Genesis was born. Along Jesse’s journey he is accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Tulip, who happens to be a hitman, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy. Sound interesting enough right? The comic ran for 66 issues and is one of the best comics I’ve read in a while (I’m on issue 25 right now) and is full of twist and turns.
This comic is not for the faint of heart as Jesse (along with everyone else) uses profanity and is also a rather lewd piece of work overall. Any expectations you have for this show being a religious show should be shut down immediately as this show is set to be what can only be described as blasphemous. The whole topic of the show is "if God left Heaven and you had the power to change that, would you?"
