Boycott The Dining Hall; Cook Your Meals In Your Dorm!

If you're like me, you were blindsided by the cost of a standard meal plan at college. They have total control over what you eat and the price you pay for it and, well, I don't like to live that way. My particular college offers a 19 meal a week plan, a 14, and a 10. If you are a freshman, you are required to live in the dorms, and if you live in a dorms, you are required to have one of those three meal plans.

According to health experts, you should be eating three meals a day, but most of us get by with just two if you throw in a granola bar or a Pop-Tart for breakfast. Heck, half of college kids aren't even awake for breakfast. So most people have only a 14 meal a week plan. Eating at one of the four places we have options to go to twice a day gets pretty sickening by the end of the first semester. I wanted to find a way of cutting back my meal plan to 10 a week to save some money and add some variety into my diet. To solve this dilemma, I took to Pinterest to find new recipes I could make in my dorm room. And trust me, the possibilities were so much more than I had even hoped.

Mug Meals

This is as simple as it gets. All you need are the ingredients, a mug, and a microwave!

French Toast

I would definitely take some hot cinnamon-flavored french toast over a pop tart any day!

(Find the full recipe here.)

Omelette

Eggs are brain food, therefore this would be great to make right before your 8 a.m. exam! Not to mention it only takes two minutes so you wouldn't have to wake up any earlier than you usually do.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Coffee Cake

Nothing is better than a nice warm coffee cake in the morning. It definitely beats that dry granola bar.

(Find the full recipe here.)

One Bowl Lasagna

Did you think it was impossible to have yummy, gooey lasagna in your dorm room? Well, it most definitely is not!

(Find the full recipe here.)

Old-Fashioned Pot Pie

Talk about comfort food. Save this meal for the nights you miss your family and your bed at home.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Mac and Cheese

Kraft Easy Mac does not compare!

(Find the full recipe here.)

Pepperoni Pizza

This recipe is genius. I haven't tried it yet, but I am very excited to do so.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Cinnamon Roll for One

One word: "Mmm." (Or is that a sound?)

(Find the full recipe here.)

Chocolate Chip Cookie

You can also find the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe on this page! Mmm.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Fudge Brownie Sundae

Nothing is better on a hot summer day in a dorm room with no AC.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Crock Pot Meals

My college actually allows us to have crock pots in our dorm rooms! Because of how strict they are on certain items in the dorms, I am actually surprised that this was on the OK list. Check with your dorm adviser before bringing one into your dorm room.

French Toast

Can you tell I love French toast?

(Find the full recipe here.)

Overnight Oatmeal

Healthy, easy, and yummy!

(Find the full recipe here.)

Baked Potato Soup

This one is another favorite of mine. If only we could find a way to make fresh bread bowls in the microwave.

(Find the full recipe here.)

Honey Garlic Meatballs

Who says you can't cook like an adult?

(Find the full recipe here.)

BBQ Chicken Sandwiches

This is great if you have friends over and you only have one guest meal swipe. It's a yummy and fairly cheap way to feed everyone!

(Find full recipe here.)

Chocolate Lava Cake

You cannot go wrong with chocolate lava cake!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
