Wonder Woman is now in theaters and it’s already smashing records. Superhero movies are a huge genre now, but not everyone that watches movies based on comics reads the source material. After the release of this movie, Wonder Woman has likely gained some new fans that might want to start reading her comics, but it can be hard to figure out where to start when a character has so many decades of history. Whether you’re an adult or a kid, there are plenty of books and comics about Wonder Woman available for you to read. Here are some good starting points for new fans of the warrior princess.
1. Wonder Woman: Amazon Warrior (Backstories)
This is a short and cheap book from the Backstories series that gives you the character’s history, story timeline, character profiles, and more about Wonder Woman. This isn’t a book that has a plot to it, but it is a great reference book about Wonder Woman that gives a great introduction to the character. This is a kid-friendly book.
2. Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Warrior
This book is like the Backstories book above, but it is a more comprehensive guide to Wonder Woman. There are more details on the characters from Wonder Woman's stories, such as her rival Cheetah. This book has colorful pages with information about Diana Prince covering her history from the past 75 years.
3. Wonder Woman: Her Greatest Battles
This comic has scenes from all over Wonder Woman’s comic history from 1987-2013. Wonder Woman existed long before 1987, but this is still a nice way of seeing how she’s changed over the years. Since this collection focuses on battles, there isn’t much story. However, it does give you an idea of each writer’s take on Wonder Woman, so it can help you decide where you might want to start with comics.
4. Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Lies (Rebirth)
There are a few continuities for DC because after a certain amount of years they relaunch all of their comic series, establishing a new continuity. This means a new starting point begins for all of their comics. Rebirth is the newest continuity, with this volume having been released February of this year. In this comic Wonder Woman is seeking answers about who she is and teams up with Cheetah, her rival, to find the answers she needs.
5. Wonder Woman at Super Hero High
While anyone could enjoy this novel, the DC Super Hero Girls series is specifically geared towards young girls. This series gives kid-friendly versions of many DC characters, including Batgirl and Supergirl. This book is about a young Wonder Woman leaving her home of Paradise Island to go to Super Hero High where she can train to be a superhero.
6. Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood (New 52)
New 52 is the continuity before Rebirth. New 52 is one of the less popular DC continuities, but you may want to try it out anyway to see whether or not it’s for you. In this comic, Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta, is keeping secrets about where Diana really comes from. New origins for Wonder Woman that alter her traditional story are introduced in this continuity. As the title of this volume suggests, this is a comic meant for older readers, not children.
7. DC Super Hero Girls: Finals Crisis
The DC Super Hero Girls series has comics as well as novels. Again, these are more geared towards young girls, but I’m in my twenties and I enjoy the series. This is the first graphic novel of the series and it features the young heroines balancing studying for finals and saving the day.
There are many other great books that are about Wonder Woman or include her, such as the Earth One Wonder Woman continuity, the Bombshells
series, and the Wonder Woman '77 series set in the world of Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman, but hopefully this list can help new Wonder Woman fans, kid or adult, find a place to start.
