Looking in the mirror as a female can do one of two things: boost your confidence, or kill it. The issue of body shaming is such a large factor in a girl's life, and it doesn't just consist of comments. We live in a world where models are idolized and celebrities are constantly being criticized for their weight. Girls are raised in a world of comparing one's self to supermodels, a world filled with extreme expectations and, as an unfortunate result, the problem of eating disorders is never ending. It's time we appreciate our bodies for what they are.
Many people would say that I shouldn't be one to talk; people look at me and think that I can't possibly have and insecurities. Being a dancer, I am constantly looking in the mirror and judging my body. I spend 13 hours a week dancing and go to the gym multiple times a week on top of that, only to log into social media and see pictures of girls more fit than me with the body that I've always dreamed of. Body shaming comes in all shapes and sizes, but it remains true that we are our own worst critics. It doesn't matter if you're a size 2 or a size 22. The only person you need to impress is yourself, and if at the end of the day you can look in the mirror and be proud of the person you are, then you've achieved the ultimate goal.
