Bob Dylan is renowned as the speaker of the counterculture generation and one of the most influential musicians of all time. Responsible for single handedly changing the outlook of society and the government from the eyes of the rebellious baby boomer youth. Dylan, to this day, is considered one of the finest musical lyricists of all time due to his biting social commentary on issues that his generation knew all too well. I had previously thought that I was one of the only millennial that I enjoyed his work, but then I came to college.
With the growing political unrest our country has fell victim too lately, I have noticed more millennials opening their ears to the words of Dylan. Words that don’t hide from anybody and speak to the people who want to listen, no matter the age. Through Dylan’s voice, his generation gained a sense of rebellion that was never seen before until the 1960's. It sparked social unrest and a counter counterculture movement which had such a deep impact on the Government and society as a whole.
Today, we are seeing this again, our millennial generation is listening to old Dylan records, and using them as the undertone of the political disagreement we all feel. Yes, he was writing about what was happening with HIS generation such as the Vietnam War and Civil Rights movement, but this does not take away the overall message. Dylan was writing about how our voices need to be heard, and our opinions need to be taken into account. Our generation is seeing how these messages are prevalent today. It is absolutely astounding that the millennial generation is listening to music that ages even some of their parents. This shows me that we are heading in the right direction. Yes, the times may be changing, but Dylan’s words will never fail to be relevant in society.
