For all of my friends and family everyone knows I am not a huge advocate for Valentine's Day celebrations. However, at this time every year I still scramble to find ways to tell my loved ones how much they mean to me.
My question is, why do we significantly emphasize our love for others on one predetermined day every year?
We are expected to show our family, friends, and loved ones how much they mean to us in 86,400 seconds, 1,440 minutes, 24 hours, one day. One day out of 365 days a year.
This is almost impossible for anyone who appreciates the ones around them, from mom and dad to co-workers and colleagues. Although I appreciate and admire the concept behind Valentine’s Day, I do not believe it is humanly possible to show my affection for loved ones in a single day. I recognize the purpose behind Valentine's Day is to not cram all of this love into 24 hours, but doesn't it feel that way? With the romantic dinners and endless flower arrangements this day is overwhelmingly jam-packed.
I know throughout the year we do kind deeds to show our appreciation but the fact that it is so highly emphasized to condense this into one day is mind-blowing. I believe that we should articulate these feelings of love and adoration not only on Valentine's Day but consistently throughout the year.
Often times we forget to stop by to see Grandma and Grandpa or meet up with friends for coffee when life gets too hectic. We forget to show our appreciation for others in our lives even in the simplest ways.
I personally believe I have been blessed with the best people on this earth. From my wonderful parents to two hysterical sisters, a kind-hearted boyfriend, and everyone in between, they have had a huge impact on my life. I can't possibly squeeze all the love I have for them into just one day. Each person has positively influenced me throughout the years and every day I hope to make them proud. Because of these people I try to do one kind thing or give back to someone who has positively impacted me each day.
In time I hope you don’t forget the concept behind Valentine's Day, but remember it throughout the year and remind others how much you love them one random morning or afternoon. It is amazing how powerful love can be and how remarkable it is to share your feelings not just on Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day was created to be very special just as I hope everyday is full of love for you and the ones in your life. Remember that you too are blessed with the best, I know I am.
