Blending In To Stand Out

Thoughts on individuality.

Blending In To Stand Out
Julianna Zieno

In today’s world, individuality is an abstract idea. Many people end up standing out in their own way. Nowadays, I feel like those who stand out are the ones that don’t flow with the trends. It is so difficult to figure out how to show individuality. The edgy look is so common that one does not even stand out with wild hair or a piercing other than ears. In a way, I think it is amazing how much more accepting society today is than previously; although we still have so much more accepting left to do.

So here’s an anthem to those who are blending in to stand out. Don’t dare to be different, worry about yourself. Wear the clothes that are comfortable, the clothes that give you confidence. The hairstyle that makes you feel like you. There is nothing worse than giving the wrong impression because instead of embracing the inner fire, people are too busy worrying about whatever others think instead of themselves.

There is a fine line between being too selfish and ignoring the world. However, when it comes to individuality, there’s nothing more important than self-discovery. Finding what makes you happy. If it's kayaking or crocheting. Do those thing. Just because the world today doesn’t always accept what you think is fun, maybe one day they will. Hiking and outdoor sports were not always as popular as they are today. Maybe the next big thing is going to be crocheting. Fads come and go, but what makes you happy doesn’t need to. There is nothing better than figuring out something that makes you happy and doing that despite what people say. Embrace your inner skills.

Friends, the most interesting thing about each person is what makes them that person. Love them for who they are. Each person deserves to be loved for whom they are, their quirks, their idiosyncrasies, the things that make us all different. Our creator didn’t make us all the same for a reason, the world would be so boring. Sure, our differences can start fights, and make people hold grudges, but there is something more exciting about different people rather than everyone all being the same. The world would turn into such a futuristic terrifying sci-fi plot line if everyone was just clones of each other.

The moral of the story, don’t worry about being different and focus on being you. So what if being you means matching with a couple other people, because then, at least you are being true to your inner self. I still struggle some days on who I am as a person, and of course, that means chopping my hair, wanting to get a nose piercing, or a tattoo, but in the end, it is all just a discovery in my own individuality. If being true to myself means go to church, traveling and understanding other cultures, and crocheting crafts because it makes me happy, then that’s who I am. The world needs more individuals, not clones. Embrace who you are and share your weirdness with the world.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
