This article does not contain any spoilers but does refer to some plot points for the new season. This article will only explain as much as the trailers for each episode would reveal.
Season Four of the show,"Black Mirror" started streaming on December 29 on Netflix. Depending on who you ask about the show, people will either love "Black Mirror" or they're terrified of it. The show centers around the near future in a world full of now only dreamed of technology.
For example in the episode "Arkangel", a single mother who has a scare when she lost her daughter, Sara for a few minutes at a park has her daughter's brain injected with a tracking chip.
Now this isn't the same "put a tracker in your kid's cell phone" of today, this chip sends a live feed of what Sara is seeing and hearing, sends health updates of what's inside her body, and gives you the option of 'parental blocking' things in the real world on an IPad-like tablet.
Now, this might seem like a good idea in the beginning when Sara is young, but when she doesn't come home one night as a teenager, her mother brings out her tablet to see where she is.
"Black Mirror" to me, is not supposed to be scary. There are parts of the show that are unsettling, but I see it as a warning. It's a cautionary tale of how our society is changing at a rapid pace, and the technology we use is starting to engulf our society.
If you were to subjectively look at the title "Black Mirror", you can see the meaning of the whole show. A mirror reflects what we see back to us, but the color black acts as a warning. Not everything we see is true nor is it good.
In my opinion, the only episode that truly scares me is "Metalhead". In the episode, the main character, Bella is a scavenger in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world. While doing a supply run, a member of her group activates a "dog".
These dogs are robots designed to take out humans. What bothers me about this episode is that these dogs strongly resemble Boston Dynamics' dog-like robots.
If you are unaware of Boston Dynamics, they are the frequently gif-ed dog-like robots that get kicked and hit by the engineers who designed them. While their technology is theoretically going to be used for good, this episode shows how that same technology can be used for bad. That's what makes the episode upsetting, this technology is real and could be used against us.
If you are on the fence about watching "Black Mirror", I say go for it. The show offers a widely diverse cast of very talented actors. In Season Four, every episode has a female protagonist in it, something that is important and rare in a Syfy-based universe.
Each episode is directed by someone different (Including Jodie Foster!) so each one has a unique feeling to it, almost like each is a stand-alone film (but if you watch, you'll find connections between the universes).
I don't see the show as a scary story that would make you afraid of the future, but rather a cautionary tale of the bad things that could happen if we used technology incorrectly.
All four seasons are now streaming on Netflix!
