If there's anything that you should watch on Netflix it's Black Mirror. This is a fairly new Netflix series first seen on British television, but recently added onto the American Netflix queue. This show is a twisted reality, set in a futuristic time period, if you've ever seen The Twilight Zone this will remind you of that. This series is an anthology series, meaning that each episode and season have nothing to do with each other, the commonality in this series only has to deal with technology. It's called Black Mirror because the concept of a phone or a screen is a mirror, you can see yourself when on the screen.
So this whole concept of technology is fairly new to our world, in the 1990's we started introducing cell phones into our daily lives and only recently have smart phones and tablets become a huge success. If you think about it technology is rapidly and increasingly getting smarter and faster than any of us can keep up with. So who's to say that it won't get even more complex and more innovative? This is the whole concept behind this series, in my opinion, the producers and writers want to get into your head and make you think one way, but in reality it could totally be something different.
Not to give any spoilers, but within each episode they delve into the wonders of technology, the first episode explains how videos on YouTube can get out of hand and go viral. These shows can show the negative side of the internet, having something out there that you don't want isn't what everyone wants. And some will do anything to take it down, no matter what the cost. They introduce a new type of technology in the third episode, a new type of physical eye. One where you can watch back your memories and pause/block people, can look through the internet, rate each other, and go into each other's memories. It's all very confusing at first, but the more each episode explains and shows the technology the more you understand.
Each episode gives a different reality to what the technology could do to us. It also gives a satirical taste by portraying how addicted we are to our phones and tablets. I am considered part of the generation of the age of technology, the one's who grew up with technology, the one's who never knew what it's not like to not have technology around the house. And they really explain that it could change the future, that each reality and each scenario could actually happen.
I'll have to admit the first episode or two are a little bit out there. You have to take it all in and think about it, but when you really do think about it this could really happen. And as a Public Relations major watching this really opened my eyes to what the future could be like. It's very interesting to watch each episode unfold and become more confusing than the one that proceeded it. Each episode really reminds us all that in a decade or so or even a few years this may happen. The internet is an ever growing technology that many of us can't even comprehend and it's a very real possibility that this technology could exist. So I hope if you haven't seen it yet to go out and watch it, and to not judge the first few episodes, but to really delve into the ideas and concepts that this show is trying to portray.
