I just want to take a minute to tell you how amazing it is to be a sassy, afro wearing, lip-smacking black girl in 2016. Now I won't be mad or offended if you roll your eyes at my title or even click off this article, but just hear me out. I know some of you are irritated with us "blacks" openly embracing our culture, overly educating ourselves or always yelling, "black lives matter" (black lives do matter by the way), because even I wish we didn't have to go above and beyond just to prove that we are just as important as the next race. But, we do, so I will continue to write and use my voice to make a statement. But today, I just want you all to understand just how amazing it is to be a black woman in 2016.
So, let's go! Here are 5 reasons (though there are many more) why being a black woman in 2016 is amazing.
1. Black women are ranked most educated in America in both race and gender.
According to the National Center for Education Statistic we are ranked most educated in America. We also have the highest number of enrollment in college. It is pretty self explanatory why I am so excited about this. Black women understand that knowledge is power and an education is nothing no one can ever take from you.
2. The hair.
A black girl's hair is amazing at any state, whether it is silky straight or in a coiled afro, no one has hair like ours. Our hair literally defies gravity. A little water could literally send our curls into over drive. We can wear our hair so many ways. From long to short. From straight to curly. From Box braid to cornrows (they are not Kim K braids and they are no where near new, they have been in style for years). Our hair is magic.
3. Our strength.
We our the women who don't take shit from anybody. We know our worth. We are tough and unique. No one can tell us that we are inferior or destructible. It is said that marginalized people have to be strong to survive, and we have been dealt a difficult hand of race and gender intersectionality so our strength comes from our need to survive.
4. Our timeless beauty.
We literally age like fine wine. There's not much more to say, everyone knows that our beauty has no age limit.
5. Our contribution to the "American" culture.
We are so unique that things we do in the black girl culture are then culturally appropriated by whites and made their own. Our hair styles are seen as unprofessional on us but the same hairstyle is seen as a trend on them. Our fuller lips are seen as nasty or disgusting on us but their lip injections look amazing on them. Don't get me wrong I love that our culture is essentially influencing an entire race, that shows just how lit we are but I just wish that we could get a little credit for our clear contribution to their culture. Clearly Black Is The New White
