The Powers Of Black Girl Magic
The Black Girl Appreciation Thread, Part II

Black women are the most neglected and disrespected people in America. Society paints black women as angry, lazy and loud, when really they are the most educated, hardworking and beautiful people on the planet. So in this article, I just want to take the time to encourage and uplift my fellow sistas. I want to let everyone know how amazing it is to be an afro wearing, bubble gum popping, lip smacking, and skin glowing, sassy black girl. So here are a few reasons (though there are many more) why being a black girl is truly magical.

1. We come in many different shades.

Black women come in many different, beautiful, and unique shades. We our versatile beings. Some black women have dark, smooth skin that is as rich as chocolate, while other black women have the lightest skin that looks like it has been kissed by the sun. Skin tone does not determine a black girl.

2. Our gravity-defying hair.

Black hair grows up and out. It comes in many different patterns and shades. Some girls have long pretty curls, while other black girls have beautiful kinky coils. Our hair is so unique that no other race has hair like ours. If that's not magic, I'm not sure what is.

3. According to the National Center for Education Statistic, we're ranked most educated.

This one is pretty self-explanatory; black women are attending and graduating at faster rates than women of another race.

4. Our big, beautiful features.

Black women have features that many women pay money for. In society our features out viewed as less attractive until they appear on white women like Kylie Jenner. Society makes black features uncool unless they are on non-black people. Our features our so magical that society has to down play them and then throw them on white women.

5. We are resilient.

I believe that black women are indestructible. No matter what, we will always come out on top.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
