Billie Eilish Breaks Genre Stereotypes With Her New Album

One of the most anticipated albums of the year was released last week. And it's only April.

Billie Eilish captured audiences attention last year with her single “You Should See Me In a Crown." The song was played on alternative, pop and even rap stations on the radio. Since then the 17-year-old has been selling out shows across the country.

Her debut album “When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go," a mouth full, is beyond the boundaries of any genre. A mix between alternative, pop, rap, folk, and EDM, this album is in a category all on its own.

“When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go" opens with a funny clip of the singer introducing the album by taking out her Invisalign and then going right into a heavy beat for “Bad Guy." The song is soon to be an instant hit on the radio, mark my words.

Following the lines of dance-pop songs, “My Strange Addiction" and “Bury a Friend" carry the same heavy hitter beat. “My Strange Addiction" is just that; strange. The song opened with a clip from The Office episode “Threat Level Midnight."

Through out the song, Eilish tells a story of how she has become addicted to a person and can't explain their fiery connection. The song is interrupted several times with clips from the same The Office episode. If Eilish is talking about having a strange addiction to Steve Carrell or his character Micheal Scott this girl completely understands.

A few songs that really set this album apart from a regular alternative album are “8" and “All Good Girls Go To Hell." These two have a sound so different from the overall feel of this album it's like making a right-hand turn at the last possible second. “8" has a weird auto tune effect that changes Eilish's voice back and forth between sounds like a child and herself. “AFFFTH" has an indie pop queens beat and soothing vocals.

A favorite of mine from this bizarre and enticing album is “Ilomilo." The vocals are heavenly evil and perfect. Eilish's beautiful voice could haunt my waking dreams. The auto-tune and melody is the perfect display of what this girl has to offer the masses.

Artist like Hayley Williams, Paramore, as well as Dave Grohl, Nirvana and Foo Fighters, have given the 17-year-old nothing, but praise and support. Williams tweeted a photo with the caption “I am a grown woman losing her shit to the new @billieeilish. How I feel about right now..." Grohl has been supporting the artist not only through social media, but he even showed up to her live performance on the Ellen show this past week.

Overall this album is amazing and worth a listen if you are looking for something outside of the norm. What Eilish is bringing to the table is eclectic and original, something the music scene is in desperate need of.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
