"Summer Lovin' Had Me A Blast"
Or so says the ever so popular movie from the 1970's, Grease.
Is a “Grease" romance even possible in our day and age? Or are boys of this generation a group of degenerate romantics?
Did Danny and Sandy really know what they were talking about?
As the school year winds down and the weather heats up, we all are secretly waiting for our summer lover to come splashing around at the beach with us (or metaphorically at least). But is this even possible?
I'd say not. Guys from this era are certainly looking for their summer fling, but hop in line, because you're not going to be the only one caught up in his antics; and this, this is why the song “Summer Nights" ends, just like summer; and as Danny and Sandy made their way back to school, their thoughts about each other couldn't have been more different.
She continued to daydream about his dashing good looks and his piercing eyes, and he bragged about her to his friends, but not in the romantic way he treated her, just in the “man I totally got some last night and she was so cool, like real cool" kind of way. However, when they finally see each other, things couldn't be more awkward, why? Well, because, although Danny had been super sweet to Sandy, he was probably just telling her what she wanted to hear for the summer.
As the movie progresses, as does life, Sandy gets hurt by Danny's lack of emotional expression and leaves him in the dust. LADIES, LESSON TO BE LEARNED HERE.
Poor clean cut and proper Sandy, left out in the cold by bad boy Danny, who was so intriguing to her before. But man, she showed him and then he realized that, wow, maybe he wasn't a stone cold killer. Maybe he had feelings for someone after all; her name was Sandra D. How could he get a second chance with someone he had hurt so badly because he wasn't looking to date? Maybe he could win his way back into her heart; after all, who wouldn't want to be swept off their feet by a surprise visit or kind gesture?
A. Girl. Can. Dream.
Later, Sandy shows up in all black, a fierce outfit choice, after his first attempt of talking to her to get her back (classic love story) and he's taken back, like “I thought maybe I had lost her forever". After he finally spits some type of compliment out (because lets face it, words are hard sometimes) she says, “Tell me about it, stud". SO FIERCE. *Applauds*
So back to the real world here, can the guys step up to the plate? Or are their minds going to be forever wandering, blank, waiting for the right girl to come along and emotionally smack them upside the head and show them that there is more to life than just being.
So lets pack up our college dorms, apartments, houses, and get ready for the impending summer. Lets go out to our study abroad trips, internships, and new jobs, and remember, we're young, wild, and free. And if our Danny happens to come along, just to put him in his place.
And this is what to be said you, and you, and you, and you, emotionally degenerate boys,
“I hope you find someone that you can't live without. I really do. And I hope you never have to know what it's like to have to try and live without them."
