Make 2018 Your Year
Alex Sorto

As 2017 comes to a close and we welcome 2018, it is exciting to look forward to what the new year has in store for us. While Christmas and New Year's celebrations are hectic and tend to tired us out, it is important to prepare yourself to ensure that 2018 is one of the best years yet. Here are five ways you can take control of the new year and thrive.

1. Cut out bad habits

While this may seem difficult, cutting toxic people and things from your life can only benefit you in the long run. People who do not provide happiness in your life are not worth keeping around. And, after all, the start of a new year also calls for new beginnings. Taking this step will undoubtedly help make 2018 your year.

2. Smile More

I know what you're probably thinking, that this is the most cheesiest thing you've ever heard. But with so many distractions going in on in our lives, we can easily forget to smile and appreciate the little things in life. Remembering to smile every chance you get can help maintain a positive mindset. Giving recognition to the little things in your life whether it be helping someone in need, complimenting someone, or even something as simple as saying hello to someone you wouldn't usually, will allow you to become more aware of even the smallest of things that make you feel good.

3. Spend less time surfing the Internet

This may be one of the best ways to make 2018 your year. Resorting more time to actually living in the moment and doing things without considering social media or fixating on the lives of others will contribute positively to your year. In this generation, we devote way too much attention to social media and keep tabs on other people, what they're doing, who they're seeing, what they're saying about who, and things of the like to keep us entertained. Focusing on yourself and living in your own shoes can most definitely make 2018 a year filled with unforgettable memories and self growth.

4. Try new things

What fun is continously following the same routines, visiting the same places, or talking to the same four people you've been best friends with your whole life? Trying new things and exposing yourself to different experiences and people is a great way to make your year rich and interesting. Keep your door open and see what kind of new beginnings come your way!

5. Spend more time with friends/family

If you've ever lost a loved one before, you know what it feels like to have that voice repeating in your head like a broken record. "if only I could spend one more day...." Living in such a crazy world, unexpected things, both good and bad, can happen at any given moment without warning. You don't want to be the one who regrets not spending enough time with friends and family once it is too late. Appreciate loved ones in your life and show them your love and appreciation!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
