Coming home for the holidays is always something to look forward to. Your parents welcome you with open arms. You get to sleep in your own bed. Your high school friends get back together and pick up where things left off. The thought of sliding back into the comfortable lifestyle that you had before college is so appealing that you can’t help but count down the days until it’s time to leave campus. But there’s one thing that truly makes coming home the best experience ever. You get to see your four legged friends who have been waiting for you to come home since the day you left.
When you walk in the front door, your dogs greet you like you never left. They immediately run up and sniff you from head to foot, licking you while they sniff. Depending on the size of your dog, they may try to tackle you or they may just jump at your feet and beg you to pick them up so they can get to your face. They may bark or yelp out of excitement. No matter what they do, you can tell by their reaction that they are the most excited family members to see you coming home.
For the next few days they follow you everywhere. They want to sit on the couch with you. Help make dinner with you. Sleep with you in your bed at night. Take afternoon naps with you on the couch. And if they are really clingy, they may even try to follow you into the bathroom. They get sadder than usual when you leave because they don’t know if you’re coming right back or if it’s time for you to head back to college.
Dogs are really good at sensing emotion and they can always tell when you need some extra companionship. When you’ve been gone from school for a week, you start to miss your friends. Your puppies can tell when you’re feeling a little lonely and they will always be there to comfort you. Whether it’s just sitting next to you while you watch a movie or holding them while you cry, your dogs are the best companions to have when you get lonely.
If you don’t have any dogs you probably can’t relate to this article. I highly recommend you get one. Family is great to have around when you go home. They are a source of comfort and they are great to talk to when you need a break from school friends. But you get tired of their constant nagging. Dogs are the perfect companions to have because they like to stay close and treat you like the center of attention but you never have to actually talk to them. There are no expectations to meet from your dogs and they treat you like you are the only thing that matters in their world. When I go home I look forward to seeing my dogs the most because I know that they have been patiently waiting for my return since the day I left.
