The month of July holds more than just Independence Day and 10 minute long firework shows. The month of July also holds the annual Studio Ghibli Film Festival. Throughout the DC Metropolitan area, many pop-up film centers are showing almost every popular movie.
These films are not only different and foreign, but they aren't your typical "kiddie" animation movies. No, these films feature many different life lessons such as : the importance of family, being adopted, and overcoming depression.
Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation film studio based in Tokyo. The studio has created over 30 animated films and is widely popular all throughout Japan as well as the United States.
There is something for everyone in each film. Here are the best ones based on one's persona:
1. For the Independent Feminist: "Kiki's Delivery Service".
Let's just say Kiki ends up having to save the life of the boy who is madly in love with her, talk about not-so-damsel-in-distress.
2. For the Day Dreamer: "My Neighbor Totoro".
Satsuki and Mei's days are filled with vivid dreams, meeting mythical creatures and hanging with their furry friend Totoro.
3. For the Animal Rights Activist: "Pom Poko".
In order to save their homes in the forest from being bulldozed, this pack of raccoons shape-shifts to protect what's rightfully theirs.
4. For the Marine Biologist: "Ponyo".
Many of the scenes feature beautiful crystal images of the ocean and the sea life beneath.
5. For the foodie: "Spirited Away".
The theme throughout this film is greed. Almost every scene features delectable savory animated food or a character stuffing their face.
6. For the Introvert: "When Marnie Was There".
Disconnected and isolated from those close to her, Sara bonds with a girl only she can see but later comes out of her shell.
7. For the Hopeless Romantic: "Howl's Moving Castle".
This girl literally disobeys her parents and risks being cursed for love. Oh man... get the tissues ready.
8. For the Sympathetic: "The Secret Life of Arietty".
Arietty and her family are the last tiny people left. Let the little people live!
These movies are hilarious, sad, and inspiring.
