WARNING: This post is for all those food lovers out there. This post will make you hungry.
For those of you who don't know (which was me up until three months ago), the local food here in Hawaii is referred to as lunch plates (or sometimes referred to as bentos), which generally consists of some type of meat such as spam, teriyaki beef or chicken and then a side of macaroni (mac) salad and white rice. And let me tell you, it is amazing.
I just have to make a special note on the Macaroni salad here because I fell in love with it. The macaroni salad in Hawaii is so different from the mainland's macaroni salad, which I know, is interesting but it is true. The mainland's macaroni salad has nothing on the macaroni salad here in Hawaii. However, this post is not about the macaroni salad (which turns out I could probably write a whole post all on mac salad), what this post is really about, are the two best spots on the island to get some amazing lunch plates: Rainbow Drive-Inn and Diamond Head Grill & Market.
Rainbow Drive-Inn is personally my favorite spot to get lunch plates as of now because the food is great and the prices aren't too bad (considering the prices in Hawaii). Here will find you some of the best teriyaki beef, mac salad, and white rice. However, what makes Rainbow Drive-Inn really stand out from other spots I have been to is this amazing shaved ice topped with soft serve ice cream creation that I have yet to learn the name of. My friend bought it for me for my birthday and it was delicious! A must have for, well... Any day in Hawaii!
My second favorite spot for a local lunch plate is Diamond Head Grill & Market. Diamond Head Grill is this awesome little spot where you walk right up to this window, order your food, and then grab it from the next. I feel that the price is little more competitive than Rainbow Drive-Inn's, but you are getting what you paid for from here! And after you finish your lunch plate you can go into their market that is right next door and purchase some of the most amazing and delicious desserts you will ever have! That, I promise you. One of the best carrot cakes I have ever had is from Diamond Head Grill & Market.
These are two must-go-to spots on the island for amazing lunch plates and delicious desserts!
