If you have ever watched a couple of episodes of "Grey’s Anatomy," you get sucked into the storylines immediately. If you’ve watched more than the first season and became addicted like I did, then you start to expect some heartbreak coming. You get attached to the interns-turned-doctors at Seattle Grace, then unexpectedly everyone dies. After watching the finale of season 8 recently, I was so affected by the deaths of two characters in the show that I had to do research about why the creator Shonda Rhimes wants to break viewers hearts. It’s not actually her fault. This article reveals the secret of why “everyone is leaving and everyone is dying,” as Meredith said after the heart-wrenching event that happened in season 8’s finale.
P.S.- There are spoilers in this article, but there are spoilers to this show everywhere you look on the internet. I didn't even get to the episode where McDreamy dies, but everyone was talking about it on Twitter when I was only on season 2 of Grey’s. It’s about the journey you take with the characters, even if you know the fate of the characters you will still be taken by surprise.
Let's start from the beginning In season IDK, when Izzie gets brain cancer. It doesn't look too bad for Izzie, but as the end of the season rolls around, she just flat leaves. She doesn't die like Denny did and broke out hearts for the first time in the Grey’s world. So why did Shonda Rhimes get rid of beloved Izzie? Usually, when a character dies or just leaves, it’s because they don't want to be on the show anymore.
It’s shocking, I know. Katherine Heigl won an Emmy for her role in the show, then requested to be written off the show because. Remember George O’Malley? Yeah, he didn't pass the intern exam and it just went downhill from there. TR Knight who played George felt like his character was just worked into the script but not important enough in the show as a whole, so Shonda Rhimes wrote him off the script, in a really sad way. It’s sad to see them go.
And the infamous season 8 finale, where we lose arguably the two best characters on the show. McSteamy, Mark Sloan and Mere’s sister Lexi are booted off the show too, in probably the worst way imaginable. I was traumatized, and that’s what made me do some digging to find out why my favorite characters have to leave or die. Eric Dane AKA Mark wanted out of Grey’s to pursue another show, and so did Lexi’s character Chyler Leigh. So, in order to give fans some closure, both Lexi and Mark who were soulmates leave the show together. So next time you are watching "Grey’s Anatomy" and one of your favorite characters leaves or dies, just know that it’s not Shonda’s fault, it’s the actors.
