Hello fellow witches and wizards (if you are not a Harry Potter fan, we should change that, but you are still welcome here) I have made a list of some spells that may be used to your advantage within your daily life.

If you are in need of a wand but don’t have any way of getting to Ollivanders, hit me up, I have my connections.

Also, surprise surprise, Dumbledore’s Army meetings will be starting up again soon, so we can practice these spells. Yes, there is no need for an army that we know of at the time being, but we always like to be prepared. Harry has managed to get some time off from the Ministry now, so this is a great opportunity for you to up your skills. (Seriously though, if you have not read Harry Potter, a big piece of your life is missing and you should read) (TIP: buy the books used on Amazon, they are way cheaper and still in great condition, but even when they have a little used markings, it gives it that mystical vibe while reading.)

Aberto (uh-bare-toe): This spell can open objects such as doors or windows.

Example: picture this- you are carrying stuff back from your car to your house, but don’t want to make more than one trip. So you load your arms with everything you possibly can, squeezing something between your neck and maybe even holding something in your mouth. When you get to your front door, you realize there is no way you are opening this dang thing without dropping even dang thing you are holding. Just use this spell to open the door and you are ready to go, straight into the house.

Accio (ah-key-she-oh): This charm can be used in two ways in order to summon an object to the caster. 1) Cast the charm and then name the object in need, and if done correctly, the object will soon be in your possession 2) Cast the charm straight at the object in need, and again, if done correctly, the object will soon be in your possession.

Example: if you lose your phone like I do every 5 minutes, this charm can come in handy “Accio Iphone.” OR while you are getting ready for the day and want to wear that cute shirt but can’t find it anywhere “Accio cute shirt” (this charm comes in handy for me since I lose stuff quite often)

Alohomora (al-lo-ha-mor-ah): This spell can open and unlock doors

Example: while you are carrying those groceries in and the front door is locked, use this spell to unlock it. OR if you are like me, struggling to use a key to unlock a door, this spell comes in handy.

Anteoculatia (an-teo-oh-cuh-lay-chee-a): This is a hex that turns one’s hair into antlers.

Example: if you have a social for your sorority, and the theme is animals and you are really trying to go all out, this hex is for you. OR someone just makes you mad, you might get a good laugh out of giving them antlers (just don’t use it on muggles, that is against Ministry of Magic laws).

Apparate (aa-puh-ray-t): This is a teleportation spell, but you have to pass the test in order to utilize it. User can teleport themself and anyone touching them to any location of which they desire.

Example: I am sort of in love with travelling, so this comes very much in handy. You want to go to Hawaii? Just apparate and you can be there in a seconds notice. Grindelwald, Switzerland? Rome, Italy? Pyeongchang, South Korea? You got it!!!

Avada Kedavra (a-vah-dah ke-dah-vra): This is a killing curse, which is one of the three unforgiving curses, and causes death without any marks of violence on the body. In the wizarding world, it is one of the most powerful and sinister known spells.

Example: Hopefully this isn’t a spell you will ever have to use. It is Dark Arts, and unless you come face to face with Voldemort, who has already been defeated, you should stir away from using.

Bombarda Maxima: This charm makes large explosions capable of tearing down and destroying big things.

Example: you are trying to escape some big bad monster, but there seems to be no way out (you know like in all the scary movies) just use this charm to blow down a wall and you are out of there.

Cantis (can-tis): This is a jinx that causes the recipient to sing.

Example: you know how girls think it is the most romantic thing when a boy sings for them, well here you go. You can make your man sing for you all day long. OR if you want to go christmas caroling, but none of your friends will join you. Not anymore, they will be caroling christmas songs all night long.

Colloshoo (co-lo-sh-oo): This is a hex that causes the target’s shoes to stick to the floor.

Example: you are in the middle of a game/ race, just make everyone’s shoes stick to the floor and winner winner chicken dinner.

Confringo (con-freen-go): This is a curse that causes anything that comes in contact with it to explode. This curse is very dangerous and can even be deadly.

Example: well sometimes I just like blowing things up, ya know? BOOM. But be careful not to kill anyone.

Confundo (con-fun-doe): This charm causes the person of target to be confused. Easy way to trick someone into forgetting something or believing something else.

Example: let’s say you just messed something up. You exposed some information to your friend that they were not quite aware of yet. This is when you confundo them.

Crucio (kroo-see-oh): This is another unforgiving curse. It is known as the torture course. This tool of the Dark Arts is used to cause excruciating pain on the victim.

Example: beware, if you use this curse, you could spend the rest of your life in Azkaban. BUT if you were to use it, maybe on someone who really deserves it. Someone who hurt a loved one. Even then, it is still Dark Arts.

Depulso (de-puhl-so): This charm is the opposite of the Accio charm, which summons an object to the caster. This one banishes whatever the wand is pointed at.

Example: you did something and you need to get rid of the evidence. BOOM this banishing spell will have that thing gone in a jiffy.

Expelliarmus (ex-pell-ee-are-muss): This is a disarming charm often used for defense, and it forces the victim to let go of whatever is in their hand. Usually that is their wand.

Example: this was one of Harry Potter’s go-to spells. If you ever find yourself in a duel, this will come in handy. Unless it is with Harry, he already knows this move pretty well.

Expecto Patronum (ex-pek-toh-pa-tro-num): This charm is a very famous and powerful defense charm, but it is also very difficult to conjure one. It produces a positive source of energy that takes the form of an animal, which is the only defense against dementors.

Example: only time you need this is when coming in contact with a dementor, unless you are just trying to show off that you know how to conjure a Patronus, which although is very impressive.

Impedimenta (im-ped-a-men-ta): This is a jinx that slows down the target, but it is only temporarily.

Example: I am kinda sorta really lame and watch slow motion videos of cheetahs running, so it would be cool to see that in person (but not like I am ever just going to casually pass a cheetah). Dogs running in slow motion is cool too ya know?

Imperio (im-peer-ee-oh): This is the third and final unforgiving curse. This curse places the victim under complete control of the caster.

Example: if you want your little brother to make you a sandwich, just cast this curse on him. Even though you could go to Azkaban for this, you would have a yummy sandwich.

Levicorpus (levi-cor-pus): This jinx causes the target to be lifted in the air by their ankles (the counter-jinx is Liberacorpus).

Example: let’s say someone is just making you mad, so you decide you want to have a good laugh, this jinx is perfect for that. James Potter used it on Snape, and they had a good laugh (besides Lily, sweetheart).

Lumos (loo-mus): This charm is used to produce light just from the tip of your wand or light up the surrounding area.

Example: well this can just be used in many situations. For myself personally, I use it when I get up in the middle of the night to pee because I have the smallest bladder in the world.

Muffliato (muff-lee-ah-toe): This charm is used to muffle the ears of the surrounding people near the caster; therefore, it allows you to conversate without being overheard by surrounding people.

Example: you and your gang are trying to plan a scheme, but you are in a populated place and can’t be overheard or your plan will be ruined. “Muffliato,” problem solved.

Protego Totalum (pro-tay-goh toh-tuh-luhm): This charm/ enchantment is used to shield an area and protect the people within it.

Example: if you want to be a champion at hide and go seek, this is your spell. Ever wonder why I always win this game?

Reparo (reh-pah-roh): This is a mending charm that can be used to fix broken objects.

Example: I use this quite often on my phone screen because I have cracked that guy way too many times. I am very thankful for this spell.

Revelio (reh-vel-ee-oh): This charm can reveal hidden objects or a person who is under a spell that is changing their appearance.

Example: (sorry intertwining a superhero reference) if you are having a duel against Loki, Thor’s brother, he might try and use his powers of manipulating his physical appearance. In that case, you can use this spell against him.

Stupefy (stew-puh-fye): This is a stunning spell that causes the target to become unconscious.

Example: we all have that one friend that doesn’t-stop-talking (it could be you), so you can use this spell to make them stop talking. Don’t worry, they will wake up eventually.

Wingardium Leviosa (wing-gar-dee-um levi-o-sa): This charm is used to make target object levitate or fly.

Example: I don’t know about you, but I think flying objects are pretty cool. Make your toothbrush fly, cat, or even car.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
