If you do not own a dog or are not a dog enthusiast, it can be difficult to understand the bond between a dog and it’s owner. I could see why the infatuation could be a bit confusing, but once you have a pup of your own I promise you will change your opinion.
My dog, Emmy, has been in my life since I was seven. We bought her at one of those pet stores in the mall (I know, so bad) and she has been the apple of my family’s eye ever since. Emmy is a shia-poo, a mix between a shih-tzu and a toy poodle. She was the runt of the family and was roughly about three pounds when we got her.
Today, she is ten years old and weighs in at a meaty nine pounds. Do not let her age fool you, she is still as active and rambunctious as a puppy. Her small stature does not stop her either. Her bark is loud and mighty and she wants everyone to know that she is the head of the household.
Despite her cute look and quirky mannerisms, there are many more reasons why I love her. She always has an ear to lend. It may sound crazy but she loves to feel included in conversation so she is more than happy to listen to my problems when no one else is around. Secondly, cuddling is her favorite activity. The place and the time does not matter, she always wants to snuggle up and watch a movie. Thirdly, she always knows when I am upset. If she can even sense the smallest bit of sadness, Emmy comes along to try and cheer me up. Whether it is licking my face, doing something silly, or plopping herself directly on top of me, Emmy never wants to see me sad or upset.
Some may say Emmy is “just a dog,” but she has a bubbly and bright aura about her. She never bites or growls and she is always looking for a new friend, whether it be a human or another dog. Emmy wants to love and to be loved and it’s very clear to see. The hardest part of my day is leaving her. She gives me kisses goodbye and then she somberly watches at the door until I pull out of the driveway. But the most rewarding part is coming home and seeing how happy she is when I walk back through the door.
Emmy may just be a part of my life but my family and I are her whole life. So when I get annoyed by her constant kisses, I remind myself that it’s my duty to care and love for her. She makes everyone’s day better whether they know her or not and that is what makes me love her that much more. Every dog has their own personality but I admire Emmy’s. My dog is my best friend and I could not ask for more.
