Having an 8 a.m. class usually implies that you got unlucky with your class scheduling dates. You have to force yourself out of bed, can’t snooze too many alarms, and walk in the morning cold to a class you will probably zone out in.
Or you might not sleep through class and the next thing you know, it’s week 7 and you still don’t know the professor’s name.
I have always had 8 a.m. classes and while I will constantly complain about how early they are, they have their perks.
1. I do my homework faster so I won’t stay up too late.
No partying or lounging around till 2 AM or procrastinating on an essay late in the night. Having an 8 AM means I need to sleep early to get at least 7 hours of sleep. Even though this rarely happens, having an early class keeps me somewhat motivated to finish my work before midnight.
2. I don’t waste my mornings.
We all love sleeping in. If I didn’t have morning classes, I would definitely wake up at noon at the earliest. Having an 8 AM means I need to wake up, get ready, go to class, and carry on with the rest of my day.
I automatically feel more productive. While I do often feel really tired and groggy in my 8 AM math class, it helps me wake up and get energized for my day to come.
3. It’s better than having a night class.
Evenings and nights are for studying, hanging out with your friends, and participating in other activities. You don’t want to see all your friends having fun at an event while you’re stuck in a 3-hour night class.
I took a political science night class last year, and it was just so dreary. We also were the only class in the whole building at the time. A lot of people have 8 AM classes and can join in your misery, but most people don’t have night classes.
