The day this shoot occurred, my friends and I were planning to visit a nearby beach in Holly, Michigan. After a series of rather unfortunate events, we ended up spending the day at my neighborhood pool. I wasn't anticipating for this shoot to expand into what it is now. In fact, I second guessed even bringing my camera to the pool that day. The reflective qualities of the water, the distortion it caused, and the immersion concept of it inspired me to capture my friends in quirky ways. I played with this concept of immersion by experimenting and allowing my friends to float and move throughout the pool however they saw fit. Even though we were not alone in the pool, the photos give a sense of solitude and emptiness within this public space. This solitude concept led me to think about how we as humans aren't always aware of the environment that surrounds us. We are constantly immersed in a space, but often times we become numb and unaware of that. My English teacher, Mr. Paris, reminds us everyday to move mindfully throughout the world. Being present in the moment and feeling yourself in the space you occupy is a simple way to remind yourself that you are a human and are simply, alive. I believe paying attention and observing the world can help anchor you into the current moment. Avoid drifting into a world of boredom and routine by observing the everyday aspects of life that we are surrounded by.
