Vegans, lactose intolerant people, and pretty much anyone who doesn't like dairy, rejoice!
Ben & Jerry's, one of America's most popular ice cream brands, has officially announced their dairy-free line of "ice cream." The products will be made from almond milk instead of cow's milk. While there will be a four to six week wait until the products officially hit the shelves, this is a big move for an ice cream company like Ben & Jerry's.
This vegan line of flavors comes in response to a petition on Change.org created by Jenny Foy and Doug Reed of Charlottesville, VA with over 28,000 signatures. A large company like Ben & Jerry's responding to a petition like this could mark a change in the ice cream industry and perhaps other large ice cream companies will begin to offer dairy-free desserts.
Ben & Jerry's will be offering four dairy-free flavors as pints. Two are dairy free versions of their already popular ice creams, but two of them will be flavors unique to the dairy-free line of flavors.
The flavors have all been added to the Ben & Jerry's website and include:
Chunky Monkey: "banana non-dairy frozen dessert with fudge chunks and walnuts."
Chocolate Fudge Brownie: "chocolate non-dairy frozen dessert with fudge brownies."
Coffee Caramel Fudge: "coffee non-dairy frozen dessert with fudge chunks and a caramel swirl."
P.B. & Cookies: "vanilla non-dairy frozen dessert with chocolate sandwich cookies & crunchy peanut butter swirls."
While four flavors doesn't seem like a lot (the company has over 30 dairy flavors currently in circulation in the United States), but it's definitely a start. If these flavors do well then there is certainly a chance that the company will pick up more non-dairy flavors and maybe other ice cream companies will follow the example that Ben & Jerry's is setting.
Whether or not you're dairy-free, the two new dairy-free flavors are certainly worth a try! After all, who doesn't love a good pint of Ben & Jerry's even if it is technically "non-dairy frozen dessert."
